Pre-order Throwing Copper now and listen to the Bonus Track of "Hold Me Up" here Initially released on April 26, 1994, Throwing Copper cemented LIVE's position as one of the most instrumentally powerful and lyrically impactful bands of the modern alternative-rock era. Throwing Copper, which topped the Billboard 200 Albums chart a year after its initial release, also features a pair of No. 1 Modern Rock singles ("Lightning Crashes," "Selling The Drama") and has since been certified 8x multiplatinum by the RIAA, having sold over 8 million copies. Produced by Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) and recorded at Pachyderm Recording Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, Throwing Copper built upon the earnest sonic template the tight-knit four-piece band from York, Pennsylvaniaestablished with their compelling 1991 debut album, Mental Jewelry. From the anthemic manifesto of "Selling the Drama" to the fervent declaration of "I Alone" to the unrelenting charge of "All Over You" to the emotional-rollercoaster journey of the epic "Lightning Crashes," Throwing Copper handily reinforced LIVE's drive to connect with their ever-expanding audience in as many ways as possible. "Throwing Copper is big songs, big feelings, big dynamics," observes vocalist Ed Kowalczyk. "It was us taking the cart and throwing it way ahead of the horse, and we hoped the horse would eventually catch up. We had a 'let's build it and hope they come' attitude." Adds bassist Patrick Dahlheimer, "While touring for Mental Jewelry, the rooms were getting bigger, and I wanted our new music to fill those places and beyond. With Throwing Copper, I just knew it had to be more grand." From there, LIVE was on a clear roll, having scored a key slot at Woodstock '94 on August 12, 1994, in addition to logging their first appearance on Saturday Night Live on January 21, 1995, and subsequently laying down an intimate nine-song set for MTV Unplugged on February 15, 1995 — all key signposts along the way for Throwing Copper's ultimate ascent to the top of the Billboard albums chart on May 6, 1995. "When you listen to it now," guitarist Chad Taylor says of their notable Woodstock '94 appearance, "the crowd is so loud, they literally overcome the sound of the band at times. It's magical! As I was mixing the audio for this re-release, it was giving me chills. Because I realized it was the band is in its primal infancy — the true birth of LIVE." Without a doubt, "Lightning Crashes" is the galvanizing force of nature that took both LIVE and Throwing Copper into the next stratosphere. "Everyone in the band felt 'Lightning Crashes' could be a big single," admits drummer Chad Gracey. "That was based on, one, the greatness of the song, but also, two, the way bands at that time would build to their album's big ballad. We thought if we could get two singles out and then 'Lightning Crashes,' it could be successful and huge." Kowalczyk humbly recognizes how Throwing Copper continues to elicit indelible, deep-rooted feelings to this day. "The fact that these songs have become part of our fans' DNA — that this album still matters to them and there's still such an emotional connection — that is the real accomplishment," he concludes. "All of the other things are great, that there are all of these trophy moments to reminisce about. But at the end of the day, the process and the journey and the music transcend all of those." You can catch LIVE in amphitheatres and arenas this summer as co-headliners of The ALTIMATE Tour with Bush. The ALTIMATE Tour got off to an early, rousingly good start with powerful performances from both bands at the Live Nation tour launch event at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on March 12. Hold Me Up is on Spotify now. Finally get a good quality version of this outtake. Looks like I will just listen to this release on Spotify as I am not springing for the 2Lp/2CD set SDE set.
Shame they are missing a bunch of tracks released on the singles from Throwing Copper like the acoustic versions etc.
Definitely a must have for serious live fan. Im good with my old copy for that price. I would of liked to have the woodstock set though.
Glad to see "Hold Me Up" finally getting legit release. How did that not make the album (or any of the subsequent albums??) Woodstock was probably a big moment for them, but I wish they'd have picked a different gig, or supplemented Woodstock with other '94-'95 recordings to more fully represent the tour, since there's a lot of songs missing I'd love to hear as live versions. Also an official release of their excellent MTV Unplugged performance would've been cool.
There was a bunch of B-sides for Throwing Copper and they included none of them (acoustic, live, and a demo or 2). It would've filled out both discs. Weird they didn't just add those on.
Yeah, that's weird too. But my favorite tunes from the album weren't played at Woodstock but played at lots of, if not all the non-festival TC dates ("Pillar Of Davidson," "Dam At Otter Creek") and it'd just be cool to hear what they sounded like live.
Here are all the Throwing Copper song/era B-sides: I Alone (acoustic) Selling the Drama (acoustic) Lightning Crashes (Live @ Glastonbury) Waitress (Live @ Glastonbury) Sh**e Towne (live) Iris (live) All Over You (live)
More than that. 3 singles for All Over You with multiple live tracks Lightning Crashes singles has Beauty of Gray (live) and TBD (acoustic) Selling the Drama singles with multiple live tracks White Discussion with a live version of WD plus a remix
I don't know what to think of this release, but it sort of epitomizes Live......lazy. 3 b-sides (one of which was released 15 years ago), and a live performance. They have demos, there was MTV Unplugged....they could have easily filled out a second disc. This is exactly what they did for Mental Jewelry, but this album was their pinnacle, their most well-known ....and they spent about 10 minutes deciding what to put on it. Zero effort from the band. I'm a huge fan of the band, too. Was expecting so much more. Heck, even re-record the album acoustically or something. But man, Hold Me Up....what a track. They wish they could write a song that was 1/10th this good now, and they left it off the album originally.
The MTV unplugged set would have been very welcome in great quality. Missed opportunity — I think bands really underestimate how loved their Unplugged sets were back then. I would have bought the Unplugged set on vinyl without a thought.
My guess is that it was hard to obtain the rights....so in a sense I get it.....but Live has a history of overpromising and underdelivering. I liken them to the Simpsons....amazing, amazing output at first, and then a lot of blah for years that has tainted the memory of one of my all-time favorite bands. I'm honestly more exciting for TDTH re-release, as they have some fantastic b-sides to that album....but based on this release, they will probably fall way short of expectations.
It is absolutely insane to me that this isn’t an option. While I’d like all the B-sides mentioned, I’d be pretty okay with the 2cd set described in the deluxe version with vinyl.
I might be interested if their was a full show from a headlining gig, but only 9 songs doesn't get me excited.
Combining vinyl and cds in the one package always sucks.Stops me buying this as vinyl for me is an overpriced frisbee.
Guess I'm waiting on this. Love the music of live and other than the Public Affection Demos and a live radio show or two, I'm not much of a Live collector. I wouldn't mind getting a B-Side and Live track release that compiles all of that at some point.
Is the super deluxe available on Amazon? I too am not really interested in anything beyond the two CDs but I figure it'd be worth keeping tabs on a potential price reduction.
Has this been remastered? Or just reissue? FYI the Live Woodstock show is available as a standalone on iTunes. I can't see why I would re-buy the album for 2 unreleased songs.
I assume it's been "remastered," although the idea of remastering rock albums from the 90's onward seems pretty silly to me. They can't possibly make it louder (and yet, they seem to find ways to make these albums louder). I'd be genuinely shocked if they somehow made it more dynamic than original. But it's available for streaming so you can check it out yourself. Throwing Copper by LIVE
