This might be the best example from the '60s -- especially the last verse -

Jim James and My Morning Jacket have a few lonely-sounding songs, particularly on those recordings where the reverb is cranked up to 11. Jim's version of the Willie Nelson-penned "Funny How Time Slips Away" gives me visuals of a man sitting alone on the edge of the stage in a cavernous hall with his guitar, his voice booming off the floor to the ceiling... or something.

This Demo of XTC'S I Can't Own Her just kills me....the finished one that got released on Apple Venus does not even touch the feeling of this demo. And out and out blinder of a tune by Partridge. Capturing the feeling of a relationship that is truly over.

Their version of Rocket Man is also very lonely sounding.

Would songs that were intentionally "stripped down" qualify? I know Willie Nelson's breakthrough 1975 album, Red-Headed Stranger, was one of those.
