That's exactly what I was looking for.
    Excellent choice.
Very well put. I wish I would have put it kind of like that. "Songs that evoke a feeling of loneliness without necessarily being about loneliness" .. something like that.

    But all very interesting posts.
    Music affects people differently.

Not to derail this thread, but hopefully to enhance it, I think it's interesting that even without the lyrics, the song I posted above still conveys a strong sense of loneliness...

Here is Joni Mitchell talking about and then playing the demo of "Two Grey Rooms", titled "Speechless"

Desolation galore, Kate's Oboe playing is quite haunting.

This classical piece used to totally wipe me out in my younger days when I heard it in a late-night TV ad: Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1"

Maybe part of it is the pacing of the album, but "Treefingers" increases that lonely desolate feeling for me....

Crowded House - most of their Time on Earth record qualifies... especially "A Sigh", "Silent House" and "English Trees."

Not just thematically but sonically as well - claustrophobic, psychedelic loneliness.
