A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of being at John McLaughlin’s final show of his final US tour. Fantastic music from a guy who is still on top of his game at 75 years old.

Afterwards, I realized that I had first seen McLaughlin 45 years ago with the first Mahavishnu Orchestra, This is a long time! Got me wondering about others I’ve seen.

John McLaughlin: 45 years. August 1972 (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Sheffield, UK) – December 2017 (Los Angeles).
Billy Cobham: ~43 years. August 1972 (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Sheffield) – May 2015 (Billy Cobham Band, Zurich, Switzerland).
The Rolling Stones: 37 years. August, 1976 (Knebworth, UK) – May 2013 (Los Angeles).
John Mayall: ~37 years. November 1969 (Sheffield) –August, 2006 (San Juan Capistrano, CA).
The Who: 35 years. July 1971 (Sheffield) – November, 2006 (Los Angeles).

    What about you?
There must be people here who can beat my 45 years.

Saw The Lovin' Spoonful in 1966, then John at a solo acoustic show in 2016 at a local venue, The Sanctuary, in Chatham, NJ. After the show at the meet & greet, I said, "Hey John, long time no see. How've you been for the last half a century?", and he was amused.

That was back when 12 years ago, felt like a long, long time ago; and then you read a post like audiomixer (above) and 12 years seems like nothing at all.

Longest gap for a musician in any guise is Brian May, just short of 24 years. December 8th, 1993 (solo tour) to November 25th, 2017 (Queen + Adam Lambert).

Longest gap for an identically-billed show is Phil Collins (which, by default, applies to several members of his band, including Harry Kim and Daryl Stuermer). 22 years, 8 months. October 12th, 1994 (Both Sides of the World tour, indoors) and June 25th, 2017 (Not Dead Yet tour, stadium show). Both were phenomenal.

Back in February 1969, I saw on the same bill at Fillmore West, Albert King, Sons Of Champlin and Cold Blood. Tonight, a full fifty years later, I'm seeing Sons Of Champlin and Cold Blood.

This March I saw Graham Nash play an acoustic concert at Royal Oak Music Theatre in metro Detroit. Some 39 years earlier, in 1980, I saw solo Nash at very same venue. I’m not counting the time around 2000 where I saw a CSNY concert.
Another artist who I saw after a long interval (by his call, since he only toured twice) was George Harrison. I saw the ex-Beatle play Detroit Olympia Dec. 4, 1974 (5:30 show) and went to Tokyo 17 years later to see two of his shows with Clapton and his band.
Macca? There was a 14-year gap (76, 90) between the first two times I saw him perform.
