Even though it's out of print, this CD seems to be going for real cheap. It's always been praised as a really good compilation. Does anyone know how it sounds?

Sounds actually very good. Ya sure it's OOP??

You realize, Free Bird and another 2-3 cuts are live from "From The Road". It stands as a good compilation, but not the best IMHO, and it may or may not make you a fan of the live recordings.

I really liked the 3CD box set content-wize.

Oh, ok. I know why... It was replaced by UNi with The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd. A 2 CD set. They also have a UNi 20 Century Masters out.

It's kinda silly, because the album has been kind of a mainstay in classic rock on CD. It's also silly to have 4 different compilations out as well, or more.

The Box is where you'll find some Skynyrd bliss. If you want my honesty, get these CDs seperately:

    1. Gimmie Back My Bullets
    2. First (...And last...)
    3. Second Helping
    4. Street Survivors
    5. Pronounced Ly'nyrd' Sky'ny'rd
    6. One For The Road

Many of them are best enjoyed from cover to cover, especially Second Helping, because of the sound. You'll see....

Cool. Yeah, it is a little silly. G&P is only about 90 minutes or so, so they could've at least reissued it with some more tracks. The new "Essential" has more music, but doesn't have a couple songs on G&P (not counting the different live/studio versions, etc.). Thanks, everyone!

Justed wanted to chime in here with Sckott in that the original MCA's are very, very well done. Very analog sounding, no boosted eq.! The comp. albums are OK, but the individual albums are definitely the way to go.:)

BTW Sckott that's "One From The Road".;)

I like the box set content wise, not crazy about the inconsistant sound quality. Truck Drivin' Man sounds soft and thin, Swamp Music sounds muddy, and the unreleased Was I Right or Wrong sounds crisper, brighter, and louder than the surrounding tracks.

I like Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd. It covers more tracks from Second Helping than Gold and Platinum but it does drop Down South Jukin' and On The Hunt. Yet, it has good liner notes. Still, I just think the group has way too many best-of's out there.

I like the sound of the remasters, and prefer them to the originals.
'Skynyrds First - the complete muscle shoals album' is a bit too bright though.. never heard the original of this if there was one?
Does anyone know if the box set is remastered?

snowman, is that different than "Skynyrds First And...Last."? I have this one and it's MCABD-31005 and it sounds great.

I'm not a big fan of the Deluxe Edition of One More From The Road - redundant tracks and - despite it being the original tapes with no overdubs - muddy sound.

I really liked the 2-CD remaster that came out in 1996. That one seems to be OOP...

My one seems to be remastered with extra tracks I guess.

Interesting comment there Kym' regarding 'One more for the Road' . I was about to buy the Deluxe version. Maybe I'll check out the OOP one. Do you have the deluxe version, Dave? Does it sound ok?

    Snowman.

Can anyone comment on the audio quality of the gold remaster of Pronounced?

The MCA golds in general are pretty bright sounding. I have the gold Street Survivors and it is ok, but nothing special from a sound perspective. According to an old Goldmine interview with Al Kooper, the original MCA cds of the first three were all done by Al (the original producer.) Going from memory here, Al was unhappy with the sound of the box set and mentioned he was not asked to be involved with it. He also praised the Mofi second helping as being better sounding than his own version...... steve c

Are the original Skynyrd CDs on MCA the ones with the grid back inserts and the "Compact Price" logos on the lower right corner of the booklet cover? Also, is the sound of the "Gold and Platinum" CDs on a par with the sound of the original MCA CDs.

    Thanks,
