  5. Because the Japanese Audiences are so respectful; your not constantly distracted by Crowd Noise.
[only once do those in attendance disrupt a song on the album]

Yeah, I remember that one. Lost mine somewhere down the line. Believe it had a version of "Mandrake Root", another early Purple like "Wring That Neck".

Looking forward to responses to your question Moonchild which might be better answered by someone other than me at least until I can do some comparisons, which I'm not particularly great at unless it's blatantly obvious. I brought it up after opening a sealed Warner Brothers CD bought over 4 years ago, listening to it from beginning to end and being reminded how much I love this album, though probably listened on vinyl more than anything else. Only vinyl I have is a ~80-82 German pressing that replaced my original beat up WB, the Simply Vinyl Lp, and the Friday Music reissue. Had other CDs, cassette, and probably 8-track. Interested to hear from someone who has made more of a direct comparison than I have and I'll revisit my vinyl as well. Glad to see how much this album is appreciated.

Was the three CD version from the 90's ever remixed with the weak bass fixed? Love that set except for the fact that you can barely hear Roger.

I always thought the band's playing on "Machine Head" was just a bit too.....mannered. Trying to get the perfect take, etc. On "Live in Japan" they just let it rip. Furious energy with great precision playing. It's a high-wire act performed with aplomb. Great recording and, as others mentioned, a polite audience that fueled but did not get in the way of the band.

Catching a band at their apex on a night (or nights) when all the moving parts are working beautifully together makes a great live album.

I have the British, American and Japanese first pressings and for me the British pressing is the best, mastered by George Peckham with a variation of "Porky" in the deadwax. The Japanese "Live in Japan" Porky pressing is also excellent. That being said the US Warner pressing is decent but to my ears a notch below the other two but still nice to have.

I always liked the versions on this album more than the original "Machine Head". And those were all here except (without looking it up) "Never Before" & "Maybe I'm a Leo" right? Purple seems like a textbook example of a group that was better represented live than in a studio. Wish I'd seen them at this time but did see Rainbow 76-78 when they were still cranking up those amp stacks.

The super deluxe version box set has remixed versions of all 3 shows. Bass is better but it's also mastered louder. The vinyl is better than the CD.

It's always something......drive me nuts. The mastering on the original 3 CD set is quite good but lacking bass. Now, more bass but inferior mastering. It never ends.

True. The Super Deluxe has all 3 complete shows. The earlier Live In Japan was missing songs so it could fit on 3 CDs.

    what everybody else has said.

A premier band at the top of their game, recorded raw, pure live, zero overdubs.

An extremely rare animal in the genre of "live" albums.

Because it's just simply the best live album, by anyone ever. It basically RUINED me for any other live album.

The original 1988 first CD release was a single CD with the same material as the original 2LP vinyl, followed by the 3CD release in 1993 and oddly the 25th anniversary 2CD release that had extra songs .

Here is a nice history of the releases
