We are almost at the beginning of the road for the modern era of music and although I enjoy music from before this time period also when we get to 1954 I will probably leave movement in this direction for someone else...

    So for now.
What are you favourite songs the you could compile in whatever way you choose from 1956
They don't have to be singles
They don't have to be anything like mine

    Rock and Roll
    Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
    Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
Don't Be Cruel - Elvis Presley
    I Got A Woman - Elvis Presley
Blue Suede Shoes - Elvis Presley
Tryin To Get To You - Elvis Presley
    Money Honey - Elvis Presley
    Paralyzed - Elvis Presley
Be Bop a Lula - Gene Vincent
Race With The Devil - Gene Vincent

    Ballads/Love Songs/Mellow
I Want You I Need You I Love You - Elvis Presley
Hallelujah I Love Her So - Ray Charles
I Love You Because - Elvis Presley
Why Do Fools Fall InLove - The Teenagers
Love Me Tender - Elvis Presley
    Love Me - Elvis Presley
Wouldn't It Be Loverly - Julie Andrews

56 was the year Elvis took over the world. There is probably a lot more great music in 56, but this is the stuff that I'm most familiar with.

Someone should make a late 50s essential thread, because quite frankly it's difficult to find what's really good in the gap through 1955-1964

    No biting mate.
If you go to the listed years, there are a lot of suggestions of great songs in that period. A lot of it will depend on whether you like the fifties rock and roll sound.
There is a ton of great jazz, and I have some of it, but I am not fully fluent in jazz and don't pretend to be an expert.
If you don't hate Elvis Presley, Elvis Is Back is quite stunning sounding for a 1960 recording and has some great music on it. Don't let the seventies popular portrayal of Elvis taint your ability to hear great music :)
Ray Charles is always worth a listen. There were guys like Link Wray, Duanne Eddy and Eddie Cochran doing some cool guitar stuff.
Being a keyboard player, you may like some Jerry Lee Lewis stuff, of course back here everything was leaning towards the piano, but Jerry was a very solid player.

Edit - can't forget Little Richard either. Probably the first inspiration for the hard rock vocal and also a good piano player

My 60-minute playlist is actually 1956-1957. I hope that's not too much of a problem; it's all sequenced and everything and I can't be bothered finding out which is which. I like it because it strays pretty far afield from R&R:

    • Raga Simhendra Madhyamam - Ravi Shankar
    • Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
    • Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins
    • That'll be the day - The Crickets
    • Why do Fools Fall in Love? - Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers
    • I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash
    • Suzie Q - Dale Hawkins
    • I Put a Spell on You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
    • St. Thomas - Sonny Rollins
    • March from the River Kwai - Mitch Miller
    • America (from West Side Story) - Leonard Bernstein
    • Banana Boat (Day-O) - Harry Belafonte
    • Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Ella Fitzgerald
    • Gesang der Junglinge - Karlheinz Stockhausen

That's eclectic! Would you have room for Pat Bone and his cover of I Almost Lost My Mind?

I might add Lloyd Price ''Just Because". Because, you know, it's great, and John Lennon recorded it too.

BTW I'd exclude Ooby Dooby. I think it only gets selected because of Roy's later stature.

I go by my Dad's record collection for these 50's lists. I only add songs that are in my collection (or in this case, most are in my Dad's collection).
