I'm happy to announce that I'll be making my own movie (or arguable pilot for a show) by the end of the year. I would love the feedback of you knows.
Warning, it will be very dark, with lots of gritty language.
But if you were to take the time and give me constructive criticism, I think I can be on to something very good!

Are you going to be writing down words from our suggestions like I quoted you on? If so, I think you're in for a long slog.

What the heck does "of you knows" mean?

Well so far the plot and characterization needs more work.

If it’s very dark then you need more lights. Good luck.

My suggestion would be to not use gritty language. One, it makes it more difficult to program in festivals. Two, it makes algorithms shy away from promoting your show on different platforms, because well... kids. Three, it also makes it seem like you have a very small dictionary.

This also comes from experience. It’s a fine line to walk, and when you go there it has more impact, rather than hearing it every other word.

    The script is king.

Best of luck. I have a lot of admiration for independent filmmakers. If you'd like constructive criticism, perhaps you could offer some more information-- maybe give us an elevator pitch?

Also some of the production details would be of interest. Are you using an iPhone to shoot it? Do you have a crew lined up? Is the script finalized? I've been working on my first screenplay on and off for six months and it's been a challenge, so I'd personally be interested in hearing more about your creative process.

    On a budget..
iPhone and a pro editor. Cast bare minimum 1-3 actors. Short film, 20 minutes could be less ambitious, depending on synopsis, script.

I have to disagree about the language thing.

The only shows to not feature cursing are children's shows and network shows. Pretty much every critically acclaimed adult show in 2020 has profanity.

I don't intend for there to be cursing in every sentence but there is zero benefit of a drama having G rated language in 2020.

No, I want to buy an actual camera. Though, honestly newer phones probably have a strong enough camera.

My creative process has been mostly mental over the last several years but now I'm writing my ideas down and telling my friends.

My crew will be on the small side. I took video production class in high school so I do have some experience with filming and video editing.

I don't see any downside to pursuing my dreams, the worst that happens is that I have a crappy pilot episode on youtube that I get made fun of for.
Some of the replies are a bit...condescending. What is the point of replying to people who are making fun of me?

    A few cents worth:
    Feed everyone well.
    Script is everything.
Rehearse the hell out of your actors, because on set you most likely won't have a lot of time to deal with them.
Storyboard everything so you know if something might not "cut".
Make sure you have high-quality sound throughout. Stop a take if the sound is compromised.
Don't use handheld or gimbal shots unless there is a real reason to do so.
Edit with a purpose for the scenes, don't cut just to be "exciting".

How can we constructively criticize if we haven't seen the script?

Lol I couldn't imagine The Sopranos or The Wire with G rated language

I’ve never seen them. But I know plenty of great dramas, noirs etc. that don’t rely on profanity. They rely on great scripts and acting. That’s what will carry your movie.

  23. The character and their background determines what type of language they employ. Harvard-educated professors speak differently than Mob enforcers.

Of course the script and acting are the most important part. I'm just saying that TV has changed a lot since the 70s, dramas typically feature realistic language.

True, but honestly even professors curse plenty.
