I'm just a bit of a snob about rhymes and making sure the lyrics scan.

Ask Carrie Underwood what it's like to step into Julie Andrews' shoes. Apparently Blunt acquits herself well.

Enchanted is one of my guilty pleasures (although it’s actually very well done and nothing to be guilty about) and this scene is my favorite. It’s got that kind of energy that just grabs you, like the In America scene in West Side Story.

The thing that is most impressive in Enchanted is how Amy Adams managed to take her character from a live cartoon to a real woman. The scene where she gets angry and feels passion for the first time was some great acting.

I worked on Ms. Adams' Sunshine Cleaning some years ago, and she was fantastic in it, just a total pro, really good in the role.

I saw MP Returns today with my wife. We left flat. The music has no real hooks (a couple of songs were decent), nothing stayed in my head; at some points it was please may this song end. Performances were fine, story was OK, just kind of meh. I really wanted to like this picture. I found out from watching this today that the original was all about the music for me, and without those Sherman Brothers songs there is no magic … imo.

I'm still going to see it.

I hope the songwriters behind the Scottish Christmas Zombie Musical Anna and the Apocalypse get a bunch of work - the songs they came up with were wonderful.

I enjoyed it that much this afternoon that I'm going back to see a 9.30 a.m screening tomorrow morning.

Julie Andrews, when I was a child, was iconic. I loved Mary Poppins. Always will. (However, her other film, I loathed. You can shove yer EdelWeiss where it don’t echo. Only time nazis & nuns should appear together is in 70s porn).

Was a little trepidatious on hearing it was being updated. I had fears of its original charm being eroded by shoe-horning in actors of colour and rap music to make it more P.C friendly for modern cinemas. Thankfully they haven’t gone that way.

Emily Blunt is marvellous as Mary. Cool, aloof (and sexy!). The new songs hold up and there’s many knowing nods to the original (pigeons, kites, gloomy oppressive bankers, a cheeky-chappie ‘Orlright Guv’nor’ proletariat who are remarkably good dancers, and endless talking cartoon animals).

Colin Firth is an utter Dastard, and Dick Van Dyke saves the day. Shocker.

Only thing of colour that jarred was Meryl Streep’s wig.

The original runs 2 hours and 20 minutes its like the Gone With The Wind of children films.

My wife and daughter went this afternoon. Their report was that the new Mary Poppins character is too "bitchy and unlikeable" throughout the whole film -- unlike just being mildly aloof as the original was. Otherwise they thought it was a pretty good copy of the look and sound (with updates) of the original. My wife also commented that she had seen several interviews and talk shows chatting about the film, mentioning how the new film had made them cry. My wife cries very easily at films and she said there was nothing even remotely making her feel that way at this film.

The critic in my local paper felt the same - that the mediocre music flattened the movie

Isn’t that how Mary is written in the books? I’ve never really read them but remember her being rather stern.

I have to say, the music is the weakest part of the movie. But it is a good film.

Speaking of Mary Poppins Returns, Sir Lenie Colacino said there was something familiar about the new Mary Poppins poster that he couldn't quite put his finger on...

The original is such a classic, but I'll agree with the poster that said it's like Gone With the Wind. It's about 20-30 minutes too long. The chimney sweep song (Step in Time) in particular seems to go on forever. That's always the spot where my daughters started to zone out.
