Chatting with a friend yesterday who was lamenting that a Christmas CD he wanted to buy - Oxford folk band Magpie Lane's Wassail! album, from 1995 - was only available from Amazon at a whopping £1,192.9o. Out of curiosity, I checked the band's website to see if they were still selling it, and there it was, for £13 including postage. A difference of £1,179.

I found that just mind boggling. It got me to wondering whether anybody on the board had bought a copy of a CD for a ridiculous price only to spot it going for a lot cheaper, later on.

    Anybody?

I'm more interested in stories of whether people have been caught out by huge prices only to discover a cheaper copy soon after, rather than just a list of expensive CDs. :)

I watch ebay, where extremely expensive CD's are sometimes eclipsed by a new seller with a down-to-earth price

    Sensible move! :righton:

I've never used ebay. Always seemed to be many pratfalls to be avoided.

From my experience, at least for the type of music and bands I'm looking for, the amount of unofficial releases is very perverse. Extra due diligence is required, depending on what you're looking for. And as @carlwm said, there are pitfalls to be aware of.

On ebay I never buy high, so I ordered a CD, only to find out later what a bargain it was.

Markets change and it costs nothing to watch from the shore.

If an item is not available at all at Amazon, you will have shysters who will list their copy for a thousand bucks (or whatever), looking for a sucker.

It doesn't mean the same item is not available at Discogs or eBay for only a few bucks.

It's pretty common now that Amazon has locked out most of the 3rd party sellers in music.

There are ridiculous prices for almost every item on Amazon; always from 3rd-party sellers.

    It doesn't mean anything.
