That was bad. Really bad. The sets and costumes are great, everything else is awful. I never give up on a show after one episode but I think I may with this one.
I was ready to ditch it in the first 5 minutes, but my wife said, "Maybe it gets better--let's give it a while." Nope, it did not, and we were in agreement by the end. I've deleted my season pass.
Not having seen it, what do you guys think, would it have been better with Downey as Perry Mason ? Or does the whole concept/execution stink ?
I remember 2 years ago when everyone including all the critics panned Succession on HBO after not only the first episode but after the 3 episodes...
My impression was that the professional critics have praised the show. I heard a not so positive review on NPR yesterday and I think that was the first negative word I’ve heard about it.
Yeah...not good. Very disappointing, especially since I've wanted a new vehicle for Tatiana Maslany's talents for a while now. It's almost like they tried to make this version of Perry Mason the polar-opposite of the classic 60's tv show, and went into the abyss...
Disappointed to hear this. I've always been a fan both the books and old TV show and was hoping they would stay somewhat true to the character as originally envisioned by its creator. They could still be gritty and dark without turning Mason into a depressed, dour sad sack. I haven't watched it so, I could be totally wrong in my assessment, but that is the vibe that I am sensing. I have been considering getting HBO max and Perry Mason was one of the reasons. Still not sure. Of course, I'll reserve a final opinion until I actually watch it.
Honestly, don’t put too much credence into many of the opinions here. I really enjoyed it. Check it out.
Just think it’s like way too early to tap out an HBO miniseries lol. I’m binging it when it’s finished.
I watched it and thought 'This seems pretty bad, maybe I'm just not in the mood...' Now it seems I'm not alone, disappointing.
Some reviews: Perry Mason doesn’t quite justify its lavish reboot Perry Mason review: sleuth reboot is intense, stunning – and gruesome 'Perry Mason' review: HBO's love letter to all things noir
The whole thing has that been there done that feel to it and didn’t break any new ground. It’s very dark and looks like it will remain very dark which means it won’t be any fun and will be a slog to get through. ‘I will give it a chance but I’m not really looking forward to the next episode if you know what I mean.
I'm enjoying it. I'm so glad it's not like the long-running tv show. Hope Mason's PI period is long-lasting, I enjoy this more than his courtroom drama. I'll see how this develops.
