    Darker could be due to smoother treble and/or tamed sibilance.
    Richer means more of the harmonics present in the recording come through.

    My headphone setup tends to the darker and richer side of the spectrum. On purpose. It's very intentional. Darker and richer in that context does not mean any loss of transparency or muddy sound. My headphone setup has very good transparency. I tend to call it rose colored transparency because of the darker richer thing going on. But I also consider it more transparent than similar level setups that have gone for objective neutrality.

    The Victor Talking Machine Co. would like to have a word with Michael about a record being worn out after being played 100 times. Here's how a shellac 78 from 1930 sounds after being played 100 times on an acoustic 1926 Orthophonic Victrola (with a steel needle tracking at approximately 130 grams!):
