There seems to be a lot of love for the 2nd bootleg, but I heard that one has particularly poor audio quality. What do people think on here? I have 1, 3, and 6 so far. Not really sure I need anything else, but I may pick them up.

I had some time to spin the first side of Copenhagen tonight - it’s kinda late so I couldn’t have it too loud, but Coltrane’s solo on ‘So What’ is just so so good. He’s playing with the whole modal apparatus the whole time.....breaking it down, turning the melody inside out. Love it. You can almost hear everyone (band mates included) holding their breath whilst he plays.

I also just got Vol. 6 "The Final Tour". A long time ago, I did own the 4-CD Dragon release from 1992, this one:

Miles Davis With John Coltrane And Sonny Stitt - In Stockholm 1960 Complete

But there is quite some difference between these sets, since the one linked above also contains the Sonny Stitt recordings from October 1960.

Nice to have the recordings from March 1960 with John Coltrane in one complete (?) set.

Has anybody compared the sound quality of the new set with the previous releases?

Been playing Disc 2 (2nd GQ live set) from Vol. 4 the past two days. It is great stuff.

I have the Vinyl Me, Please pressing of the Paris sets & love it. I was playing it today, actually. Coltrane was much wilder during these first shoes & I love hearing how hostile the audience gets at times when he’s really letting loose. I love even more how he responds by just going even further out with his playing.

A great pressing of a great performance. Highly recommended.

I take it that it's too early in the ballgame that anybody has heard any rumors yet about what the next release may be?

There’s usually 13-15 months between sets, so I expect the next one to come next summer. Maybe an announcement in March. I’d like a ‘73 set, but I have a feeling it will be ‘63-64.

Bumping this - anyone heard any rumours? We are almost exactly a year since the last one.

Are they usually released a year apart? I was quite late to the party & bought a load of these last year.

Yeah, I think 12-15 months, someone mentions upthread. But one would usually expect an announcement about 3 months ahead at least.

    The schedule has been:

    September 2011
January 2013 (delayed from September 2012)
    March 2014
    July 2015
    October 2016
    March 2018

The last three apparently were timed to commemorate the recording dates (Miles' first appearance at Newport, the sessions for Miles Smiles, and the Spring 1960 tour). If they keep that up, and the next installment focuses on another European tour, we may not see it until Fall--unless it's a '73 set, which could include some Summer shows from Japan and Europe.

  12. Is the Paris set on vinyl sourced from digital?
Reason I ask is the Stereophile review of the Copenhagen set notes that a digital source was used for that vinyl.

Time to resurrect this thread. Any rumours around as to the next volume in the series? As always, I would love to see some stuff from the 73-75 period. A comprehensive set from Japan '75 seems a no-brainer.

I've heard no rumors or seen any info. I'd welcome a Japan '75 set. I'd also love to see a '64 set. . . there are Japanese and European shows that could be included.

It's about 18 months since the last box so you'd maybe expect some noises soon.

'64 or '75 would be most welcome here too.

71 and 73 should certainly be on the list for stand alone sets. A taster of each on the Newport set, but the Euro tours have some great tapes out there.

If they want to release 1/22/75 Tokyo and some other unreleased shows from '75, that's good--but they probably won't do that, since all of the known boots besides 1/22 are audience/band recordings. If they decide to repackage Agharta/Pangaea + 1/22 as a "Bootleg Series" set, they've really lost their way. Screw that. NO. They should put out 1/22 and reissue the other two titles as regular albums.

They still could put out second volumes from 1960 and 1969, even a third volume from 1960 at some point, or do 1964, 1971, or 1973 in the Series. Maybe some broadcasts from the '50s. Good board tapes from Keystone Korner would be a sweet surprise. A lot they could do before repackaging official albums as "bootlegs," again.

I'd like a "Freedom Jazz Dance"-type release for the "On the Corner" era studio stuff. Would be a good way to reissue that material for us non-box-set owners, cough cough

I forgot about October 1970 Fillmore West. You can get 10/15/70 on CD from a few European labels, using a radio broadcast where the DJ accidentally played a PSA over the music for a minute. Other nights from the run were circulated by the old Miles Tree. But if Sony could put out the original boards, that would be cool. The CBS Records Convention set from 8/2/70 and Miles' spots on The Tonight Show and The Dick Cavett Show would make nice filler or video, too.

I might have already said this, but 1970 is quite well represented with live releases. Time for some other years before they go back to 70.

The problem is, as mentioned, that there is no material for a comprehensive Japan '75 set beyond one radio broadcast.
