I am guessing the one step of Pearl is mostly sold out? Wow, compared to Blood on the Tracks at 9,000, the 10,000 copies of Pearl were gone quickly. Glad I bought it. Great album and pressing. I just listened to Desperado again which is another home run. I wonder if the any of the upcoming releases will top 15K.
Thanks. I'll give my kids the credit. If we had not been watching Rudolph, I would have never thought of it. Thirty years later I still laugh at Beavis and Butthead and the "Christmas porn" scene. Maybe, I'll grow up next year.
I can’t believe people are paying such outrageous prices for out of print one steps. I got my Bill Evans Sunday, open played once, at less than double original price shortly after it sold out, but failed to realize one of the discs was punched off center till recently. I emailed mofi explaining I have a number of one steps but they replied they didn’t have replacement discs and I should buy a reamer to enlarge the hole. Imagine paying $700 or 800 for this title sealed and open up to find off center or some other issue.
The prices of these 'One Steps' will be hundreds of times higher in the near future, why...something called massive inflation!
Got the Music Direct catalog in the mail today and it says the Bitch Brew one step is a 45rpm. Have we confirmed that it is indeed a double 33 and this may be a printing error?
Bill Evans Sunday is an earlier release that has its price buttressed by the much higher demand for the One Steps that developed over the past year and a half. It is true that most of the earlier One Steps are hovering around a 200-250 price, but only the Evans Sunday and Abraxas are at that stratosphere level, and that is largely a function of the smaller print run (1/3 or less of some current releases), and with Evans, I think, completists who got Portrait and then wanted the other one to go with it. I understand your frustration with the issue with your copy having a hole punch issue, but as with anything, if it's something that will bother you, it's really worth inspecting the thing carefully when you first get it to make sure you are happy as that is the window for getting replacements on these due to their short time window run nature. The point you make about buying sealed and then having an issue to me is just the reality with any sealed record. Buy it sealed and open it when you can still get replacements, if it's a few years on, I would pay a premium for an open and graded record over a sealed one. The problem is too many people pay a huge premium for the sealed ones, so it incentivizes people to leave them in shrink for years.
33 1/3. Now that we're getting a first 33 1/3 UD1S (Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew'), lets also have same for 'Live Evil'!
For anybody that’s still looking for it the Iron Butterfly Super Vinyl is in stock at MD: Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Numbered 180g SuperVinyl LP)
Really? Have you tried a first pressing original on some of these? Or other audiophile lables? Oops I see you are talking BOTW The last cut sounds great They wore out the mastertape over the years It’s a case by case basis. Engineers, tape condition etc Like anything here/hear on SHF I still feel the AP Evans Sunday At the Village Vanguard sounds more musically true One Steps seemed to be goosed on the low end A slight over-emphasis A wonderful pressing but not automatically the “end all” one Problem is you have to commit to one, because by the time you hear the buzz or negativity it is already sold out Going through the Music Direct Calendar that came today Back Cover One Steps Hotel CA, Southing Else, VH I, Elvis, Tapestry, Rhymin Simon, JT GH and Bitches Brew They also show One of these Nights. The Long Run, On the Border, EC Unplugged, Muddy Waters, CSN, Music Direct lists Hotel California and the Van Halens coming in 2022 No specifics on what is coming out first
Ahhh! Wither's greatest comes in and MD finally ship my backorder from 8 months ago. And then I get an email to say the other item "Love - Forever Changes", which has been shippable for months - is not in the order. Seems they made a mistake and didn't put my copies aside.
I feel for you, man. Same thing happened to me last spring, also with Music Direct. Had a bunch of back orders that were slowly coming into stock, and when everything was in, then they tell me that, whoops, their inventory count was wrong and they were sold out of Oh Mercy. As that was the one I was most looking forward to, I was not too happy. To their credit, though, they came through later with a promo copy, so I had a happier ending. But I'm a lot more leary now about multiple pre-orders with MD now. I had also had the same thing with a MoFi order, just a couple months prior. One of the SACDs I ordered along with a One-Step pre-order was sold out when the One-Step finally came in. Inventory error again. In contrast, according to folks I've talked to at Elusive Disc and Acoustic Sounds, they supposedly pull items from inventory and place them in separate bins, to reserve the copies. I have no way of knowing if that's true, but so far so good.
So this is interesting, getting down to the nuts and bolts in these guys businesses. They talk about all that's been transpiring through covid, and todays economy and supply issues. Then what they are doing to combat and resolve them and how they will work together. Top quality products? With such a high percentage of defective vinyls(warped, dished and off center)? It is useless to have luxurious packaging ,and mastering at the top when the vinyls have ah high percentage of defects. Who bought records from AS ,MFSL ,pressed by RTI years ago, knows very well that the defective records were very rare.
I was thinking the printing error might be the 2LP part, but of course they wouldn’t be splitting the long tracks on sides A and B.
I am really amazed at the percentage of brand new, mostly premium (UD1S in some cases) vinyl with moderate to severe warps and waves. I'm not sure how people play some of these without a periphery ring. I've been using mine on most of my new purchases. It has to be from pressing too quickly, not allowing ample cooling time, etc. I also have noticed that sleeves appear to be "baked on" to the vinyl, like the vinyl was warm when sleeved and the poly lined sleeves kind of form to the records. I do get their issues, though. Heightened demand, a growing worldwide market, and less supply. Something has to give...
Listen to what they say in the video. Most of the stuff they create is top quality. And yes there are issues like with this Miles set as we all know But as they say , audiophile buyers are more picky than most. And they spell out why things are delayed and costing more.
Glad I backordered the Bill Withers for the wife. I called MD today to place the Filles de Kilmanjaro and Nerfertiti 45s on backorder as I never got around to getting them back when since I had older copies, but glad I came to my senses. They told me that they shipped my Bill Withers out last week (free shipping) and that it was a good thing I backordered it as it is already sold out again. Glad I did the same with Blonde On Blonde. Cool to see others coming on board and getting all 6 of the Van Halen's. Where Jazz is my go to genre, I still have a fondness for this band. I saw them live close to 20 times and was fortunate to hang out and party with them on several occasions. Eddie could not have been any nicer as was the rest of the band, all though I never had much conversation with David Lee Roth, but Sammy was always a hoot! These were the times we left the wife's/girlfriends at home and was boys night out at the concerts. Of course my friends always tagged along most likely because of the free tickets and backstage passes...can't say I blame them though. I was one fortunate person to get to do what I did for my career and never took it for granted.
FWIW, I had been looking for the MOFI Bill Withers for quite awhile, and submitted my email address at mofi.com a long time ago to notify me when it was back in stock, and they did. Fortunately I ordered it right away and was able to get it, delivered today. I'm sure it's been mentioned but just reiterating that the process works as a way to get notified before it's too late on something you're looking for.
