    I’m pretty sure Mountain still regrets declining to be in the Woodstock movie.

    Can anyone tell what kind of guitar Peter Lewis is playing? It looks a bit like a Guild Thunderbird, like Zal Yanovsky used to play in the Lovin' Spoonful, but I'm not positive.

  4. Yeah he is the total wanker of all of them. Really screwed careers of some of the SF bands.

    Films turn out the way that they do for a myriad of reasons. Did another cameraman film Marty signing lead and it not turn out in the development process? Who knows but Marty seemed to take it in stride;
    “Marty Balin: The Monterey Pop Festival was great. That was really the ‘60s. Everybody was really feelin’ good and lookin’ good and having a great time. It was all new. Everything was new. You can see the spirit in the film.”

    All I have to do is read his name in print and I can hear that control room voice saying “Skippy!” And I get a mad on.

    I remember the Grape doing "Omaha" on Steve Paul's Scene. I bought the single shortly afterward and the album not too long after that.

    In their great book on Monterey, A Perfect Haze, Harvey and Kenneth Kubernik state that the Grape only played the four songs noted above. It looks like the video of Hey Grandma is of another performance, with Tommy Smothers' Monterey introduction, which was really to their first number, Indifference, spliced on. Those are also the four songs from the festival on Dark Magic, my Moby footwear. Fake Grape!

    I saw Moby Grape at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, CA approximately 2 months after the Monterey Pop Festival. It was on August 17th, 1967. They opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. That show also included Tim Buckley. It was a mind blowing night. Skip Spence was wielding a bright red Fender Stratocaster. I remember it vividly.

    Yet Wiki has Moby’s Monterey Set as:

    Introduced by Tom Smothers.
    1. Indifference
    2. Mr. Blues
    3. Sitting By the Window
    4. Omaha

    Well I for one am glad that Pennebaker chose to focus on Grace - the contrast between light and dark on her face and hair during the second half of the song is my favorite visual from the movie.

    Yet another reason COULD have been:
    “Pennebaker's efforts to capture the atmosphere cannot have been helped by lighting director Chip Monck's lysergic condition, for all he registered as a color, he testifies, was red”

    Only near the end of the song when there is a small section of three-part harmony. Throughout the three verses ("Hey Grandma…" "S.F. freak scene…" "Robitussun…"), only Spence is at the microphone on the front line.

    Absolutely ridiculous. Still pisses me off 50 years later. I really believe it hurt Marty’s stature in the band in the public eye. I can’t imagine what he must have felt seeing it.
