As a Monkees fan and Carole King fan, it's great to hear this. It sounds like they used the instrumental part, minus Carole's guide vocal of this demo for the finished product, which would be very unusual to do. I can't tell that it was redone, in comparison. Micky's lead vocal sounds double tracked, and he may have done the backups also. Hard to tell for sure. A great song.

Carole King produced a session in New York, on October 13th 1966 for "Sometime in the Morning" along with "I Don't Think You Know Me" That track was then worked on later that month in California for vocals only it appears. Mickey is listed as lead and backup vocals along with Davy and Peter, as well as "unknown". The musicians are listed as unknown . All of this per the Sandoval book. This would seem indicate you are pretty spot on about the track.

I pulled out my stereo copy of More of the Monkees. I played all of side 2, and that track sounds way different than the other tracks. The instrumental backing track from her demo is in mono, with stereo vocals on top. It sounds a little lop-sided though, because the lead vocal is in the center, and the backups are panned hard right. I'm sure there's a technical reason why they did it that way. Now I want to find a mono copy of this album, so that song will be all mono, and will sound more together.

I thought this might interest some of you. I happened to catch this the other day on TV about Carole King. I'm happy to see Carol still working in entertainment. What talented songwriters she and Goffin were.
Carole King plays herself in the Broadway musical "Beautiful"

Now back to the Monkees :)

  7. Really sad news today: Peter Tork has died. He was 77.

Nice clarity on the backing track - especially the electric guitar. Can hear the slide-ups on the arpeggios!

    Thank You for posting.

I am so pleased that they went out on such a high with those last two albums.

You count their Christmas album as a high note?

I mean it's okay for what it is, but I'd hardly put it in with their best work(s)... Although, YVMV...

I'm guessing Vol. 2 was not released on vinyl, but I'll have to check into that.

Only Vol. 1 of Missing Links was on vinyl. Vol. 2 & Vol.3 were not.

Moved recently and misplaced some Monkee CDs, etc.. :( One set I had was from VideoRarities .. which I believe was the web version of Golden Treasures. Anyway, a few years back I bought a 5 CD, maybe 6, of Monkee CDs filled with rarities called "A Bunch of Bananas". Can't find the site. Anyone have any info or the CDs?
