“But vinyl forgives sins that CD does not?” Huh? “If I say so”? The hype sticker on the mono Saucerful vinyl clearly indicates “remastered from the original MONO analogue tapes”. There is almost certainly a reason(s) it hasn’t been released on CD. A missing high quality tape source is not one of them.
Understandable. Looks like VMP removed the AAA tag too. Oh well, a little digital on vinyl beats hunting down a $500+ NM copy any day.
No, they were supposedly going to be the 4th Floyd single and were never part of the album. But they would have made the album so much crazier and better. Would have fit right in with Corporal Clegg and Jugband Blues.
Agree, at least in the case of Vegetable Man, what a great groove and vocals, and Syd deserved another lead vocal on the next Floyd album for all he did for the band. They could have had VM as track 2 on side 1, and still close with Jugband Blues. Might have had to cut See-Saw (Make it a b-side somewhere) and move Clegg to side 2 in its place...
Yeah, See Saw is a throwaway track. Vegetable Man cooks. Scream Thy Last Scream sounds better with Syd on lead vocals than Nick Mason, but it's an awesome song. Has anyone else noticed that Syd recycled the chord progression for Baby Lemonade?
A stunningly good price, which if correct, shows that it can be done and that there's a lot of record label greed elsewhere. This whole series of Pink Floyd reissues has been fantastic value for money if you shop around for the best prices.
I think Saucerful just has to be scnsidered not only every bands difficult second album, but also the album where good old UK EMI had long term career spanning plans for their artists, and for whatever reason they let PF try and carry on with the new Waters/Gilmour setup. There was nobody onboard that could write pop singles now that Syd was out so after all a very decent effort.
It was an interesting punt, but one worth taking because at that point Wright was also one with a track record of at least writing full fledged songs, if not pop hits then at least decent enough to keep them supplied for both album and single recordings. Especially since Gilmour was not even really fully integrated yet and was initially just hired to replicate Syd's songs verbatim when they decided to carry on...
I like Saucerful just fine. It may not be as good as Piper, but I'll take it over More and Ummagumma.
I prefer the stereo mix of the Piper album. The mono was a a nice alternative listen but my early 70’s Dutch Twofer has amazing sound quality and is so lively it beats all. Still glad they’re reissuing it so you don’t have to pay $70 like I did.
I have both the RSD and a clean original UK mono and I think the RSD sounds better even if it's not AAA.
