I ran into this gem up in SF this week. It's a mid-sixties reissue of Solomon's magnificent performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No 29, Op 106 "Hammerklavier". It was originally issued as UK EMI ALP 1141. After all this collecting.....I've never come across this black UK pressed Odeon. Will I ever get to the bottom of this vinyl mystery morass?

    Always learning, Tom B.

    Export copy?

(Interesting that there's no publishing date on the label).

    Andrew,

Publishing dates on record labels are a luxury........atleast accurate ones. As far as it being an export copy............it isn't. I have about 60 UK EMI pressings.........most of which are ASD 60's and 70's pressings. By looking at the LP artwork on the back, it's a "dead ringer" for the 2nd ASD (red & black semi-circle) period. That's what has thrown me. I have great number of mono ALP reissues which use the ASD labels on their reissues...........but never on a black Odeon label like this one.

Uuuuh, I was gonna guess it was made for the German market, but nevermind. Don't know why I thought 'German', I just did:).

I love seeing the great LPs you find Tom. Also rather envious too!
Is SF some sort of vinyl hunter's paradise or something?:D

BTW, have you seen this web site?

Just to keep my post up and running...........there has to be some classical vinyl mentioned once in awhile on this forum!!!

Just discovered that a copy similar to mine of Mengelberg's box set of "The Saint Matthew's Passion" went for a mere $371.00 on E-bay. That's a steal. Most dealers are asking $500-$550 for the set. Thankfully, mine was a gift and I'll be keeping it.

I'm going down to visit a fellow music fanatic today. I'll be selling him my Rega Plannar 3. It should be a blast, just sitting back and listening to his newly broken-in high effeciency speakers that are being driven by the mighty "paraglows"........all 2 1/2 watts of them!!

    Keep on spinning,

    Tom B.

".....And, best of all, my hero Yehudi Menuhin with my other hero Furtwangler performing Mendelssohn's concerto and Beethoven Romances 1&2 on early British HMV vinyl!

It's always more impressive with the scans. I need to get my computer all tricked out like Tom's ........."
