Here are my favorite tracks from the last few albums: LIHS: I really only dislike one song on this album: "I Bury The Living." That being said, there aren't any major highlights. Nothing that I'd put in the "Classic Moz" category WPINOYB: "Istanbul" is Classic Moz, IMO. Love that track. "Staircase At The University" and "Smiler With Knife" are great. It's unfortunate that two of the weirdest, most divisive songs appear so early in the album: "Neal Cassidy Drops Dead" and "I"m Not A Man." I could live without both of those. Oh, and the bonus track, "Scandinavia," is also amazing. YoR: "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore" is one of my all time favorite Moz songs. "Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed," "Black Cloud" and ""When Last I Spoke to Carol" are all great. I like "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris," too, which I'm sure you are familiar with since it was the first single.
Well, as far as b-sides go, after his 7 year hiatus, he seemed to have amassed quite a lot of songs, which meant there were a lot of extra tracks floating around on the Quarry deluxe version & the b-sides of the singles from that album & Ringleaders. Sadly, by the time of Refusal, the b-sides of original material had pretty much dried up, to forever be replaced by live tracks. The best of his latter-period b-sides are on Swords, & for my money, the best of these are the following: Teenage Dad On His Estate Christian Dior Ganglord Because Of My Poor Education Don’t Make Fun of Daddy’s Voice I Knew I Was Next I’d also add the 3 tracks from 2011 that I mentioned previously: People Are The Same Everywhere Action Is My Middle Name Scandinavia If you also want to add album tracks from World Peace & Low in High School, I’d recommend: World Peace Is None of Your Business I’m Not A Man Istanbul The Bullfighter Dies (only Moz could write a song like this) Kiss Me A Lot (slightly lyrically but a catchy chorus) My Love, I’d Do Anything For You I Wish You Lonely Home Is A Question Mark When You Open Your Legs All The Young People Must Fall In Love Israel I’m not keen on the production on the last two albums but there are some decent songs still. Anyway, I hope this helps you discover some later Morrissey that you will like.
When I heard this, along with its A side, back in 2004, I thought "YEAH!! MORRISSEY circa Your Arsenal is back!!" Then I bought the album and saw how wrong I was.
My votes: I struggled with World Peace. I like Staircase and Kiss Me a Lot (really like the melody of this one even if the lyrics aren't his best). Everything else was a shrug or outright hate for me. LIHS - I like this a lot more than World Peace. Home is a Question Mark especially. That may be my favorite Moz song in the last 10 years. I also really liked I Wish You Lonely, Jackie's Only Happy, When You Open Your Legs, and Spent Day in Bed was pretty alright. I like the covers on the new edition too - his voice sounds great on Chain Gang, LOVE the Elvis song (You'll Be Gone), it was one of my favorite Elvis deep cuts from the 60s movies anyway. Love Rose Garden and Judy is a Punk. Glad they're compiled all in one spot. B Sides from YATQ/ROTT I like - Ganglord, My Life is a Succession, Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice, and his covers of Human Being and Song from Under the Floorboards (love the original version, Moz's version is good enough) From Years of Refusal, I love Paris, Carol, It's Not Your Birthday Anymore (that's like I've Forgiven Jesus, the title alone makes it great)
Another cool b-side. I particularly like the line: “You walk into a crowded bar & you throw your weight around But no-one can even see you.......”
If we’re including cover versions & tracks from Ringleader & Refusal, I rate the following: Covers: Human Being Rose Garden You’ll Be Gone Album tracks: You Have Killed Me (great chorus, shame about the verses) Life Is A Pigsty Dear God, Please Help Me I’ll Never Be Anybody’s Hero Now Something Is Squeezing My Skull All You Need Is Me When Last I Spoke To Carol You Were Good In Your Time
The second disc -- "Disc Them" -- of Jason Falkner's Everyone Says It's On. In fact, I wish he'd release a follow up.
Agreed! I must have listened to this album more than any other in their catalogue; except maybe I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One.
Great song, & also one of my favourites. Though, wasn’t it a ‘cover’ of an earlier version of their own song?
I have always loved Morrissey’s cover versions because he always sings them straight, he doesn’t try to change them into sounding different to the originals. That’s Entertainment was brilliant and so is this one.
Yeah, he is releasing a covers album called California Sun on May 24. Morrissey Details New Album Ft. Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, More | Pitchfork
