For me, it's got to be the Sinatra 'Concepts' boxed set from 1992. I paid $350 on eBay. I bought it because it was my understanding that the mastering on the set was superb. I ended up giving the set to my Dad for his birthday.

The Beatles, Mono LP box set for me. $329.00 from Music Direct in 2014. Also one of the best purchases I've made.

    +1 and +1.

Also the priciest item in my Discogs collection at the moment.

  5. Come Organisation 10 LP box w/ 200+ page hardcover book and bonus 10”. Cost me close to $400 last November and I could probably near double my money already.

The "Assemblage" box set by The Cure, released in 1991 with 12 albums up to Disintegration and including Concert, the singles collection Staring At The Sea and both Three Imaginary Boys and Boys Don't Cry. It's and exclusive French set with apparently unique and very dynamic versions of each CD. The cheapest offer on Discogs at his moment is $320. The thing is, I got it for free back in 1991. A friend of mine was working at a music library and one day they received this box. As they already had plenty of Cure LP's and CD's in the library, they were not going to lend it out. So my friend gave it to me, knowing that I was an avid Cure fan.

John McLaughlin's Montreux set - ended up about $375 with shipping. Only time I ever burned everything to CD-R and never listen to the "real" discs.

Bob Dylan big blue Cutting Edge from MusicToday (I think) the only retailer. With postage and tax £600. Great box and as time goes on the cost disappears into the past.
I think the big Woodstock box was about the same cost.

I was fortunate enough to be in the position to buy 2 copies of Bob Dylan's The Cutting Edge: Collector's Edition for $600 a piece. I waited a couple years & sold the extra for $1200 ultimately making my copy "free." I also ended up with free additional copies of The Beatles In Mono & Tom Waits' Orphans (thanks USPS!) thereby breaking even on those as well.

The Beatles Mono Box at $250 for me. The Cutting Edge box was tempting, but way beyond my resources.

The most expensive item I bought new was the Grateful Dead's "porch crusher" live retrospective, which if memory serves me correctly retailed for $699. I've paid considerably more for rare vinyl secondhand, though.

I think I have never spent more than $70 on any single recorded music item.

I have done things like collect a series of box sets (e.g. the three Coltrane Prestige boxes from 2005-2007, or the three Verve box sets) adding up to a $150 or so, or the Byrds Legacy CDs, or the current set of J Jazz reissues on BBE, where I have bought the whole series. But I think the most expensive single item I ever bought was the MC5 Total Assault LP box, which was about $65.

I don't think I've ever surpassed $40 for a single CD or LP.
