I heard that Elton John somehow talked Rod Stewart, who was initially sought for the part, out of accepting the role of Reigning Pinball King. With this in mind is it possible that the cover of Rod's Atlantic Crossing was the inspiration for the costume used in the movie? Looks that way to me.
