  2. This just in from the fine folks at Super Deluxe Edition, looks like it could be pretty tasty...

"Universal Music will, in November, issue Mental Train: The Island Years 1969-1971, a new six-disc Mott The Hoople box set which delivers everything the band recorded during their time at Island Records including many bonus tracks and unreleased material.

"Mental Train includes the four albums – Mott The Hoople (1969), Mad Shadows (1970), Wildlife (1970) and Brain Capers (1971) – each of which include eight or nine bonus tracks, including A-sides, B-sides, demos, rehearsals and alternate takes..."

Looks good, definitely in for this, but that's not the full Fairfield Halls show, which is a shame.

Looks very handsome but why (oh why) doesn't it include the COMPLETE Fairfield performance?

    I bet it's super-expensive, too!

Pre-ordered. My favourite MTH Era, Brain Capers is a masterpiece, loud and wild rock'n'roll !

  8. I'd be curious to know if the bonus "Brain Capers" track How Long (Death May Be Your Santa Claus) is the same as the vicious Death May Be Your Santa Claus demo track on the Purple Pyramid "Concert Anthology" CD - where Ian sings "I don't care what the people may say, I don't give a **** anyway"

So, does this contain everything from 'Two Miles From Heaven'? (the only classic MTH album I never got around to buying, mainly because I didn't trust that the recordings were actually by the original band) It's kind of hard to tell from the description. And it seems odd they wouldn't advertise it if it does.

Aside from its considerable artistic merits, I'm going to buy this just based on its title. Mental Train! (and you know it's headed for a failing trestle....)

    4 Thuderbuck Ram

    7 You Really Got Me
Bonus Tracks- Recorded 16th February 1971 At The Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden
    8 Long Red
    9 The Original Mixed-Up Kid
    10 Walking With A Mountain
    11 Laugh At Me
    12 Thuderbuck Ram

The above is the track list for the Fairfield Halls cd released by Angel Air in 2007. Could it be that the version in the new box is the correct full show? Still, too bad that it won't have the live versions of "Long Red" and "Original Mixed Up Kid".

Mine to. The bonus tracks appended to the cds on this set really look like they'll be worth having.

It appears there are just six tracks tagged as coming from 'Two Miles'... the original vinyl release (1981) had fourteen (?)

The controversy at the time it came out was that some of the archive tracks were tinkered with... "completed" by Buffin and his Mott compatriots... the slide guitar solo on 'Black Scorpio' is actually Ray Majors... so no, not all the original band.

btw... there are two threads running on this release... started 5 minutes apart.
    Maybe tie them together... ?

@ralphb The version of the Croydon show on the new set is missing When My Mind's Gone but added The Moon Upstairs. I wonder if the source listing is incorrect as the Moon Upstairs is listed as being played at the Paris Theatre on the Original Mixed Up Kids BBC disc.

The set list on setlist.fm lists When My Mind's Gone as being played at Croydon 1970 but not the Moon Upstairs. It does list the Moon Upstairs as being played at the Paris Theatre in 1971.

Just glancing quickly over the track listing I don't see the outtakes Surfin' U.K. from Two Miles From Heaven, Find Your Way from the Angel Air reissue of Mott The Hoople, It Would Be A Pleasure from the Angel Air reissue of Mad Shadows, It'll Be Me from the Angel Air reissue of Wildlife and The Wreck Of The Liberty Belle another Angel Air outtake that was unfinished.

Andy Pearce is remastering this set. It appears he has a good reputation on this forum.
I'm considering getting this in the hopes it's an upgrade of the Angel Air releases.

I just listened to the Angel Air Mott debut and it leaves a lot to be desired; harsh and loud.
Will do further listening to the other Island/Atlantic albums.
Will keep my Angel Airs but will probably get the Mental Train set hoping for a sonic improvement.
