Not a movie, but I thought The Night Of on HBO showed an interesting dynamic with the vulnerable main character coming under the influence of the most powerful prisoner in ways that appeared to have benefitted them both behind bars.

Very funny movie. Check out the British comedy series this was a spin off from; I don't think it's widely known in the US but it deserves to be...

Not a movie, but it's Rod Serling's TWILIGHT ZONE take on death row, written by Charles Beaumont. "Shadow Play"

A guy who's spent time in the Virginia prison system said this is the best prison movie he's seen:

    Felon (2008)

Not as good as most movies already mentioned, but I always thought "Lock Up" with Sylvester Stallone and Donald Sutherland was quite good.

Straight Time (1978). It's on DVD.
An intense drama, hardboiled and unsentimental.
Harry Dean Stanton steals the film out from under Hoffman without half trying.

I always like Bad Boys with Sean Penn that came out in the early 80’s. Not be confused with Wil Smith’s Bad Boys.
