A lot of great movies that year. I picked 3 that I still watch regularly.

    Driving Miss Daisy
    Uncle Buck
    Christmas Vacation

Major League comes close too. I just watched that a week or two ago.

Some movies, like Born on the 4th of July, are probably better films. Just not my favorites.

    Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Back to the Future II
Other: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen *

    * released in West Germany in Dec 1988 but Mar 1989 in US/UK. Not sure if it counts since it saw such a limited release but it's still one of my favorites....

This forgotten gem is one of my top 5 comedies.

I never thought about it but 1989 was a spectacular year for movies. Last year there were maybe 5 movies I wanted to see.

Thinking your poll list must have omitted something, I looked through a Wiki list of movies released that year. 1989 has to be one of the worst movie years ever! Very few good films and only a couple I'd ever want to see again: DO THE RIGHT THING and CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS.

Everyone has opinion and all this is always subjective, but I think "one of the worst movie years ever" would be in the extreme minority, at least that would be the minority position for cinematic movies lovers, "cult classics" and movies that have stayed the test of time in pop culture. When Harry Met Sally is considered by many to be the best romantic comedy ever made, Glory one of the best war and moving films ever made, pop culture classics like Back To the Future 2 and the original Batman and Indiana Jones, beloved sports movies of Field of Dreams and Major League, and Dead Poet's Society which many believe to be Robin Williams' best performance... One of Disney's best in the Little Mermaid, etc I could go on and on. I thought it was a fantastic year for movies, but of course I also grew up in the 80s so I know I'm a bit biased. I thought it was one of the better years for movies ever, so goes to show how differing opinions can be. Maybe others can chime in.

Great list of movies but the list is maybe missing a few international titles:

I was fascinated by the French movie Monsieur Hire

John Woo's The Killer from Hong Kong is an action classic

I also liked Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso very much.

    Both great movies.
I've seen "The War of the Roses" several times. There are so many great scenes. "And that's our Baccarat story"

Breaking in with Burt Reynolds, a sentimental favorite film for me.
The first film I was an extra in, a good portion of it was filmed a few blocks away from my girlfriend's house in Portland. I got to meet Burt and we watched much of it filmed around town.
