Has anyone compared the 2001 remaster of Muddy Waters At Newport with the one Steve worked on the 1980s? I just read a review from the All Music Guide that praises the new disc.

'This album was in print almost continuously on vinyl for 20-plus years, and MCA reissued it in a fair CD version in 1986. At least one enterprising European bootlegger issued their version in the early 1990s, but the real edition of this album to get is the March 2001 remastering from MCA. Transferred in high-resolution digital audio, it brings up the bass overall and the details of just about every aspect of the playing, as well as moving Muddy's singing several layers forward in the mix, so that one gets a very vivid stage ambience, making the original CD seem very ragged. The reissue has been augmented by the presence of four studio sides cut by the same group a month prior to the concert..."

I just purchased Steve's version today along with The Who - MBBB, and Bill Haley - From The Original Master Tapes. I think the Muddy sounds very good, but I have nothing to compare it with. I had the choice of both discs today at A+B. I choice Steve's. The young kid in the pop music department is a big fan of Steve's. He was happy that I chose the old version of the CD. But he hasn't heard the new one either.

    Thanks in adavnce.

I have both versions. Those All Music Guide guys must be listening to music on a cheap boombox again.

The new re-master does not have the same presence as Steve's version. It does make a great Frisbee though :D

Unless you just really like unnecessary top end boast and anemic bass, there is no reason to own anything but Steve's version, IMO.

Steve, if you're reading, fantastic job on this one!;)

Thanks for comparison Evan. I had my suspicions. I listend to Steven's master of the Muddy Waters right through last evening and it was great, IMHO. It didn't sound ragged  , whatever that means.

Steve, I agree with Dave. Amazing. :D It's as if you're right there with the band. It is a similar experience when I listen to the Buddy Holly. You can hear a couple of wind pops that Bill Haley makes in the first part of Rock Around The Clock. Wow.

Being one of the new kids on the block here, I'm playing catch up now. In the past couple of weeks I've purchased:

    Amboy Dukes - Ultimate Collection
    Golden Earring - Moontan
Buddy Holly - From The Original Master Tapes
Bill Haley - From The Original Master Tapes
Mamas And Papas - 16 Of Their Greatest Hits
    Poco - Legend
    Muddy Waters - Newport
The Who - Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy
    The Who - Who's Next

I also own Joni Mitchell - Blue, DCC Gold CD.

The young sales guy at A+B was looking through their puter yesterday to see if he could find a listing for the two Chuck Berry discs in Steve's discography but was only able to find one. He also searched for Billie Holiday - Master Tapes but nothing. He thinks it's deleted. I'll have to scour the used shops or ebay for that one, as well as some of the DCC stuff. It could start to get expensive though. The link at Steve's discography for Best Of The Doobie Brothers took me to an Amazon page with some guy selling his copy for $99.00 U.S.. Ouch!
