I think this is Bob's way of giving us an isolation playlist (and viewing list)......think I'll start with Patsy Cline.
Glad Bob is still about doing his thing, wasn't overly keen on Tempest and this feels like it could have been the end song and not Roll on John as both are quite similar in style. Thankful he's still here!
This piece of work ain t easily judged but after two hearings it s hard not to be impressed. The music just flows, Dylans voice sounds perfectly clear and the words are powerful beyond belief. I didn't t expect Dylan to come up with anything new really and a true epic like this was even more unexpected. As far as Im concerned a stunning piece
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow!!! It made me cry. Sounds new to me, not a Tempest outtake as someone suggested. My hope is that it is a preview track from an upcoming album we have all been hoping for and speculating about. Bodes well if that is the case. Did I say wow???
Daaaamn, playing it off like a little throwaway rocker "you might find interesting" and then BAM, 17 minutes. Gotta love Bob. The voice sounds much smoother than the Tempest years, I'd take a wild guess and say it's a couple of years old at most.
This is an overwhelming song. Is he going to drop a new album of THIS quality? (or god forbid he’s doing a David Bowie here)
I don’t know if it’s hyperbolic. It reminds me of Time Out of Mind and what a bombshell that was. it actually reminds me a great deal of Gillian Welch’s masterpiece “I Dream a Highway” a song with rampant cultural signpost drops.
Aside from the musical namechecks, there are a lot of film references in there. We haven’t seen this many from Bob since the Empire Burlesque period.
Every act of kindness just feels so profound On Wednesday my wife bought me Jamesons whiskey I was crying then I'm crying again now
I think you are mistaken about the emboldened line. He drops a name after "mister" and there's no "but". "I hate to tell ya mister ______ the dead men are free." The name sounds like "medal" or "rental."
Wow! I wasn't expecting that. I was mesmerized. Lying in bed, avoiding Corona and this appears. Put the headphones on and was truly amazed. What can you say? It is Bob Dylan. He is not playing by the rules (thank God) and we have another gem. Not just a gem, an epic gem. Wonderful. And such great understated backing too. Perfect. Nice strings and the bass in the background sounding like distant, ominous thunder. Vocals clear and upfront. What was it 17 minutes. It's not dark yet, is it? Let's hope it is the preview of a new album. Who else would do that with such a mammoth recording. Thanks Bob.
The phrase "three men in rags" comes out of eyewitness testimony about three tramps or hobos being seen in the parking lot behind the grassy knoll and arrested after the assassination. Three tramps - Wikipedia Dylan's not referring to Crosby, Stills and Nash.
I wonder if that's Scarlet Rivera on violin? Didn't she work with Dylan in the past decade? As for the song I don't share the enthusiasm of others here. It's very long and meandering and I kept waiting for it to really start or change but it's a very "one note" song and sounds much like a Tempest out-take to me. I think it's weak lyrically; too much effort to create rhymes and little to no meaning behind the "shopping list" references. It's got to be recorded prior to the Sinatra albums, surely?
