The single for Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down" is missing the grandiose musical intro that can be found on "A Day at the Races."

I like the sound of the single a little better, but I miss the extended intro from the long stereo version.

On Peter Gabriel's third album the saxaphone solo track 'Start' was properly an intro to 'I Don't Remember' - on the singles it is not included.

Going back a bit earlier, the Genesis single for 'Watcher of the Sky' excised a good minute or so of the album version's intro.

Pete Townshend's "Face The Face" had a great stand-up bass, piano and percussion intro that built up in intensity and leads up to the drum beats that open the 45 version. My favorite part of the song, completely gone from the single.

By the way, when I was in radio, we always made it a point to play "Threshold" before "Jet Airliner." Even our listeners didn't think it sounded right without it.

Sweet Emotion was probably first time I noticed this, when I got Greatest Hits cassette in high school and was annoyed that they cut off the whole intro, which I like.

I know thread is about intros being cut off, but I'll throw out there that many P-Funk singles are severly edited by necessity (not just intros though), esp. (Not Just) Knee Deep, which is pared down from around 15 min to about 4, IIRC.

Of course, there are plenty of examples of "long" album tracks edited for singles, with solos removed, etc.

Does anyone know if "I've Seen All Good People" was released as a single without "Your Move" (which would make it worthless, in my book)? If so - there's one :D .

Maybe they were released as A and B sides?? (I have no idea, just wondering).

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: I checked to answer my own question - turns out Your Move was released without All Good People (+ Sweet Dreams ??) as a b-side , thus cutting off the "ending" (Your Move/All Good People listed as parts "a" and "b" to All Good People on Yes Album).

For the hell of it I checked re: Zeppelin's Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid, which are also almost always played together (athough they are separate "songs"). Living Loving Maid was a b-side to Whole Lotta Love, if anyone cares. Hope this isn't a "hijacking" :) .

I believe the "20th Century Man" single by Kinks deleted the acoustic guitar intro.

I always liked that intro too... so much that using a cassette deck I dubbed it onto the beginning of the live 12" version of FTF (from the Deep End concerts) and managed to seque it perfectly.

Interestingly, every official version of this song was different. The original single, which came out a month before the album, had a minute-long instrumental lead-in to the first blast of the horns. The album and video had the flute lead-in. The 12" single remix sampled elements from all over the song and looped them. And both that version and the video ended with a spacey swirling hi-hat rhythm.

I think People's "I Love You" had a longer intro. Time Has Come Today springs to mind too.

Yup. That's the way I always heard it, though I think by the time I was listening it was taken from the Capitol GH CD. What about the guitar part at the beginning that is on the LP version (and Steve's DCC GH CD) of Jet Airliner? That's one I miss now, a lot, when I don't hear it.

During the 60's and the 70's , radio had patterned itself after the three minute limit for its commercial considerations and this was became a particular problem for many artists specially to an album-oriented band like Chicago.
For the record, here's a list of Chicago songs that were drastically edited for release as Columbia singles.

    Questions 67 And 68 (LP time 4:59) to (45 time 3:25)
Beginnings (LP time 7:50) to (45 time 2:47)
Make Me Smile (LP time 3:16) to (45 time 2:58)
    25 Or 6 To 4 (LP time 4:50) to (45 time 2:52)
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (LP time 4:34) to (45 time 2:53)
    I'm A Man (LP time 7:41) to (45 time 3:27)
    Dialogue (Part I & II) (LP time 7:09) to (45 time 4:53)

Another one that was drastically edited is

Feels So Good by Chuck Mangione

Amie by Pure Prairie League usually omits the "Falling In & Out of Love" intro. Nice CSN-style harmonizing on that one!

Both of these feature cool 30 second intros that never made the edit.
