I want to share a nifty and very convenient solution to portable music use in your car that I have discovered recently. There is often a small flat area in your center console (fig 1, red arrow) that can be cleared and repurposed for easy CD access while driving.

As you can see I utilize a commonly available 12 CD carrying case (fig 2)

which is conveniently placed just below my car’s in-dash entertainment panel (fig. 3,4)

Lots of tunes right there at my fingertips. It’s easy! Hope this helps, and please enjoy your music on the go responsibly!

Wait, I thought the CD was invented in ‘88?

Yeah but the 12 CD carrying case didn't come along until later. No one could afford that many CDs until then.

That reminds me, when did car CD players become a regular thing? I remember people had to load them in their trunk.

That thing would fly off my center console and soon as I hit my brakes.

True! And used CDs didn’t really start selling until after Y2K ‘cause everyone thought they might not work any more in the new millennium. Cool times, but people were kinda dumb...

It depended. At around ‘89 I had Kustom Kar Stereo (Westheimer Blvd in Houston) install me a trunk CD changer. I could load up to six discs in that sucker, for my road trips to Dallas or New Orleans. I don’t think you can find those any more. Sad.

Mid 90's perhaps, in the US. Got a new car in 1997 as I recall and a CD player wasn't unheard of by then.

As for music on the go in 2019, I wouldn't exactly call this convenient anymore. Do you leave it in the car when you're on the mall or do you carry it around with you?

I didn't have a car with a built in CD player until 2007. The last car I bought before then (2001) was cassette only. I had a Maxell converter that I ran out of the headphone jack of my Sony Discman in to the cassette player. I didn't get a car with a USB until 2016.

It goes with me, of course. Might get to hot in the car. I have a special shoulder strap that works with it. I can even fit my wallet inside. Super convenient.

I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma that has both a cd and cassette player.

I thought this post was a little odd at first, but the fact that you had so many of the early Island issues of Bob Marley impressed me.

Anything that involves CDs in a car is not "convenient" by 21st Century standards.

You, sir, are a lucky man. The designers of that Tacoma were visionary.

Thanks! It took a bit of planning and effort to set it up, but it was well worth it.
