Honourable mentions to Rob Collins and Jon Brookes of The Charlatans, and Craig Gill of Inspiral Carpets.
BB King Gregg Allman Butch Trucks Captain Al Walter Becker Ronnie Dio Leslie West Pat DiNizio Dr John Chris Squire some great musicians on these lists
Jimi Hendrix Mitch Mitchell Jon Lord Neil Peart Leslie West Felix Pappalardi Johnny Winter Steve Marriott Ronnie James Dio Cozy Powell Eddie Van Halen Keith Emerson Greg Lake Dimebag Darrell Vinnie Paul Freddy Mercury Ronnie Montrose Lemmy James Dewar Buddy Miles Those are the rock musicians that come to mind. No doubt I've forgotten some or wasn't aware that others are dead. I've also seen numerous jazz and classical artists who are no longer with us, but I'll confine my list to rockers.
Oh, I didn't know or had totally forgotten Jon Brookes has died too. Very sad. I loved The Charlatans back in the day and they're one of the few bands I've kept all my records by, albums and singles.
Ian Dury Freddie Mercury Ray Thomas David Bowie Prince Leonard Cohen Woolly Wolstenholme Jon Lord Chris Squire James Brown Lou Reed
I was at Glastonbury when Johnny Cash played and didn't bother to go and see him. That's one of my biggest regrets, really.
I saw their museum display in Liverpool a few years back. They've done well. It's 12:00am Happy New Year all!!! I'm going to keep The Kinks playing...
Prince Mile Davis Lou Reed Jack Bruce Ginger Baker Alex Chilton Linda McCartney Larry Coryell John Abercrombie Stevie Ray Vaughan Rick Danko Bill Reiflin John Entwistle Tom Petty Mike Gibins Levon Helm Albert Collins Neil Peart Brad Delp Randy Coven Warren Zevon Bo Diddley Fela Kuti Walter Becker Jerry Garcia Brent Mydland Wow, that's a lot, Tom
As for musicians I've seen perform who died when I had tickets to see them perform again, I can think of a few: John Entwistle, Johnny Winter, and Ian McLagan. I can only think of one band I've seen where everyone onstage that night has shuffled off to the great gig in the sky: the Heartbreakers (8/2/79, Max's, Thunders-Nolan-Lure-Rath). There are a couple I've seen that are down to one player from particular gigs: Ramones (saw many times, drummers Marky and Richie are alive, frontline is dead), Cream (Clapton alive, Bruce and Baker dead), and possibly Mountain (Laing alive, West and Pappalardi dead, Perry unknown).
Got To Be Free by The Kinks my second song of 2021. Stuck in on tier 4 lockdown, the irony isn't lost on me. Great album. I saw The Kinks but thankfully the line up I saw are all still alive I hope.
Instead of making a long list, I'll just say I'll always be grateful that I got to see my hero, the great Joe Strummer, in person once. He didn't disappoint.
Nobody who was actually dead at the time but.... Warren Zevon Phil Lynott David Bowie Bon Scott Ronnie Duo Jimmy Bain John Munro Jon Lord Jon Entwistle BB King Cost Powell Paul Chapman Pete Way And no doubt a few others
I forgot about seeing him with Husker Du. Others: Pete Way (UFO) Lol Mason (City Boy) Stuart Adamson (Big Country)
I saw him only once, with the Mescaleros. For some reason I wasn't expecting much and went because I got in on the guest list. A record shop I worked in was selling tickets. Bloody hell, he was incredible, with all the passion, energy and intensity he ever had. Straight in with Safe European Home then classic after classic with the new material sounding great in with them. So sad that he went not long later, he seemed to be inspired again. A great night out.
Eugene Ormandy Frank Zappa Douglas Dillard Don Reno and Red Smiley Doc and Merle Watson Mary Travers (of Peter Paul and Mary) Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs Johnny Cash and June Carter Dave Guard, Bob Shane, and Nick Reynolds (the original Kingston Trio) I’m sure there are others.
I saw BB King about 15 years ago and I coulda swore he was gonna keel off his stool and die on the stage. He ended up living (and performing) for six or so more years!
