My Miles Davis - "Bitches Brew" vinyl sounds poor...
I recently purchased a Dutch 1970 issue of "Bitches Brew" (CBS 66236). And I must admit that it sounds bad. It has a very weak bass and treble, and generally very poor dynamics. It sounds a lot worse than with Spotify.
What is Your experience with this release?
Do all the vinyl issues of this album sound worse than on Spotify?
Maybe should I buy a new pressing? Or the japan one?
(sorry if I made any mistakes I use a translator.)

I have the 2015, 180 gram, European reissue by Columbia/Sony/Legacy...sounds fantastic.

Unfortunately, I think you just ended up with a bad pressing. If I was going to buy another, I would stick with US, UK or Japan.

Just a heads up, for these kinds of things you may want to include what equipment you're playing the record on. Also, fill out the entries for equipment in your profile.

I had this release and it was great. I replaced it with the 40th anniversary edition, which is all analog and sounds very good. I had a first pressing once that sounded excellent, but it was a little noisy compared to the 40th, so I let it go.

I'm excited for the upcoming MOFI reissue.

My original Columbia 360 sounds phenomenal. The MoFi is also good but not as good.

Dutch pressings are usually excellent. Spotify may have the remix and maybe you just prefer it? I don’t know….

Also be certain yours is a 1970 issue and not a much later repressing with a 1970 date on it. Sony did some vinyl out of Holland in the late ‘80s or so. I had a copy of BB from this series and it was so bad I have no idea what it was supposed to be. Maybe it was a remix? Sounded like a 10th generation cassette dub. I think it was this one so apparently a 1990 reissue: Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

All three copies of BB that I found on Spotify are the remix. An easy way to identify it is that the trumpet passage at 8:30 in "Pharoah's Dance" has no echo effect in the remix. Here is the original mix with the effect (there is some dead air at the beginning of the video, so the trumpet passage is at 8:40):

Could it be an issue with needle time?

I'll try to complete it as soon as possible, but I'm sure it's not a matter of turntable or cartridge.

The only copy I ever owned (briefly) was a 70s US repress. The sound wasn't terrible but not great either and it had a looping groove on one track. I wound up returning that one.

My preference is for a CD edition at the moment but I would be open to trying a nice AAA audiophile reissue down the line.

Other than that I don't care enough to try multiple copies to get a "good" one... Best of luck in your search though.

    That was intentional.

My release has no bass and is very quiet. Instruments other than the trumpet are hard to hear. I don’t think that’s how good pressing should sound.

The music from the recording you sent sounds much better than from my pressing.

  14. Welcome. Regardless of where the issue lies, when commenting on sound quality, it's required that you fill out your equipment profile.

I don't think so, it was randomly in the middle of a side where a scratch was.

Why don’t you check Discogs and link the exact pressing you have?

Might be easier for folks to help you that way.

  20. I've once tried a later 70s US pressing, and I would describe it as the OP did his own copy.

Best sounding version is the Mofi release, Incredible dynamics and clarity.

I also have an original 360 and even in VG- condition I think it sounds fantastic. I prefer it to my MOFI SACD.

I’m not able to edit my post? but didn’t want to sound so absolute in my response earlier. Ive not heard an original pressing but of the reissues the Mofi Vinyl pressing is at least for me the best I’ve ever heard sound. Anyways, wish all of you a great day.

Had this one too, but sold it many years ago. The vinyl (bought new) was slightly noisy in some spots and as Mikolaj I was generally not very happy with the SQ. I have a UK CBS from 1970 now, wich I prefer.
