That would be my #3, mostly because of that impeccable guitar solo, my favorite solo of any SD song. Just picture perfect solo, , not 1 note out of place Is there another version of this song with another verse or something? I could be wrong, but I could have sworn there was a part where he sings "walking down the avenue by Radio City/ with a/ transistor and a large wad of cash in my hand..."
Have to mention "FM" as well, probably my #1.5 if there is such a thing Such a smoothly grooving late 70s song, especially the long fade. Also has my favorite SD line, "Nothing but blues and Elvis/ and somebody else's favorite song..."
Dry January AND too late here to play some Steely Dan - could set the cans up but that would mean cabling, and the wife will give me grief in the morning - what is it about cables that sets some partners off?!
Initially it was Don Henley and Nicolette Larson for backing vocals on Peg. They ended up getting axed. Steely Dan Producer Gary Katz Reflects on Firing Don Henley
Not answerable for me! Their music is too great! „Aja“ is one of my favourite songs by them, but that seems natural because I’m a drummer
I agree - it took some time to grow on me for whatever reason but now when it comes to Dan it's the album I reach for first, I enjoy it as much as their earlier work.
Tough, tough choice - the concept of 'favourite' tends to be a moving target when you're dealing with Dan songs. It's a bit easier if I had to pick what I would consider their overall 'best', which to me is "Aja" - absolutely stunning, definitely a Top 5 for me. But 'favourite'...sigh. I'll pick "Razor Boy", but damn: Rikki, Major Dude, Don't Take Me Alive, Babylon Sisters, Do It Again +++. Like I said, a moving target.
I've only bought any Steely Dan in the last five years starting with a vinyl Greatest Hits (the one that went up to Aja) then picking up SHM CDs from Japan, where available. I've not got either of the reunion albums either but I do have Fagen's Cheap Xmas box set. Due to the purchases I've made, I've never really looked at the credits, and I've never really marvelled over any particular solo. They are songs that I enjoy as a complete piece, and haven't been tempted to dissect them in any way. This is possibly because I've come to the relatively old (close to 50).
No way can I possibly pick a favourite. I like every Dan track in their whole catalogue except one East St Louis Toodle O Can't bear it.
"Show Biz Kids" or "The Royal Scam" Truthfully, I don't think I have heard a Steely Dan song I dislike.
DO IT AGAIN, their very first major hit, in 1972-73, especially the CAN'T BUY A THRILL album 6 minute version PS RIP Meat Loaf
“Glamour Profession” has been on my top ten Spotify plays list for the past four years. I really love the sound Becker and Fagen get on this tune. Szechuan dumplings at Mr. Chow always sound so good! “The Fez” always captures my musical imagination. “Peg” has Jay Graydon’s brilliant guitar solo. What a classic. I can keep going but I’ll stop at just three.
Me too. As an expat Brit there are so many references in their lyrics that I didn't understand for years until I moved to the US.
