Home At Last, love the Purdue shuffle 2nd place The Boston Rag, but the '74 Record Plant live version surpasses the studio one.
"Countdown" is my favorite Steely Dan album by far. "Deacon Blues" was my mother's favorite song in her last years, so it has special meaning for me, in addition to being a great song in its own right. My favorite Steely Dan song. The best horn chart I've heard in a rock 'n roll setting. Not to derail the thread, but I can't resist posting this. There are cover bands, and there are cover bands. But you won't find a better one than this. From Ukraine, of all places.
So many of their tunes that i enjoy and its hard to single out just the one, but if push comes to shove then i'll opt for Pretzel Logic.
I’ll tell you something funny. When I first heard that song on the radio (1972?) I thought it might’ve been a new Graham Nash/CSNY tune.
My favorite song by The Dan is not the song I think is their best song. Josie is the song that made me really love the band--and even though I now think there are technically better songs, it remains my fave and one that always makes me super happy.
Well, my daughter’s name is Josie, but it’s impossible for me to choose just one. Today it’s probably Bad Sneakers.
I can't even pick my favorite Steely Dan album, much less favorite song...but right now... King of the World. There is an awful lot going on both lyrically and musically in that song.
+1 for "Pearl of the Quarter." Closest to a conventional love song they ever did and because of the nature of their body of work, this sets it apart. I'm also a sucker for some great steel guitar! Another deep track along this line is "Dallas" (think that's the right title).
My Old School is my favorite. (Charlie Freak, Dirty Work, Rose Darling, Here At The Western World the rest of my top 5)
Pushing fifty years ago. First time I heard them, I thought they were going to be the next big thing. For once, I was right.
Great thread, even if it is like asking you to name your favorite child! After much consideration, I'd go for "Peg" because a) I love its great groove. b) It's got a superb guitar solo by Jay Graydon c) Fantastic backing vocals/harmonies by Michael McDonald. d) Terrific drumming by Rick Marotta. What more could you want?
My All-time Favourites, Based on Tempo Ballad - “Pretzel Logic” Non-ballad -“My Old School” NB1: I’m pretty sure that I can dance to both of these. Not well and not at the same time, but… NB2: Anyone who contributes to this Thread and doesn’t listen to some Steely Dan in the next, ohhh twenty- four hours, has no soul.
"Which is your favorite child?" Royal Scam my favorite album, with many choices available. Today, I'll say Kid Charlemagne.
