No one can claim they have a cool record collection unless they have at least one album by Big Star. Sorry but that is the deciding factor for me. :D

Hmmm, I could write a whole screenful about Genesis, but this is probably not the thread in which to do it. Suffice for now to say that Genesis, up to about 1980, are probably my favourite band of all time.

Where do you recommend I start? The only Genesis I own is the start - From Genesis To Revelation because I found an early 1970 2nd Decca pressing of it in a charity shop.

Named after one of my favourite bands and having a Maiden - Killers avatar. Yeah, that's cool enough!

Do we have to play them?

Do yourself a favor and don't go any further than that album. Unless of course you like hearing songs about the antics of a mouse in a house. Stick with The Jam. :D

Im now searching out original ABBA vinyl. Wish I had bought them when I was scoffing at them in the 70s.

CDs are uncool ... but I still think my CD collection is cool.

I don't care what anyone else thinks of it.

Not caring about what's "cool" is still cool, right?

Or am I being ironically uncool without even realizing it?

    Now I'm all confused.

I just can’t do the “have it for havin’ it’s sake” thing anymore. It’s too expensive in terms of money and space. If someone digs through my records they can see what’s up. I don’t sell records very often but I sure do purge them if needed. As for “uncool” I took enough abuse for listening to Prince in the 90s to kill all my pretensions.

    :laugh::laugh:

Mine are on the coffee table or at the front of the pile near the stereo. I couldn't name a song from them!

Only kidding. I have the three albums, for some reason Third / Sister Lovers is my favourite and I haven't totally got into the others.

CDs are great and I love my CD collection. So, to me they're still cool.

  17. I'm not sure that's accurate really. CS had a big hit with 'Matthew and Son' in 1967 (1968?) and then re-invented himself as a hippie singer-songwriter with 'Tea for The Tillerman' and 'Teaser and the Firecat' after which he started charting again and, particularly in the US, in a big way

The people you were most likely to see with those albums at the time were late teenage boys wandering round towns and cities in the UK, proudly holding the albums as a badge of honour of, ironically enough, how cool they wished to be (the coolest, however, were those with a copy of 'After The Goldrush')

I doubt if songs like 'Father and Son', 'Moonshadow', 'Peace Train' etc., really ever appealed to just the teenage girls' market.

And, of course, he's re-invented himself a couple of times since too.

    Best Wishes,
    David

That’s a lot of years with no Prince! And yeah he was devastatingly uncool for a while, at least at my high school.

And at least one by Pere Ubu, all the Velvet Underground albums, and one each by Merle Haggard, Charlie Rich, Waylon Jennings and Loretta Lynn.:)

My stuff is mainly old country and rock & roll, it seems as though no one but me thinks it's cool. Happy with that!

To be honest I didn't listen to him properly until about a year ago. Dirty Mind is such a great album, but I have a lot to take in. In the 90s when I was at college & uni I didn't know anyone who liked Prince!

    With the odd major lapse!

I really like the old country harmony singing, like The Louvin Brothers. I'm far from an expert. I got into some old country from being a Byrds fan.

I'm always excited when I find original rock 'n' roll record. The world is a sadder place if 50s rock 'n' roll has become uncool. I don't think it has though.
