How is that obscure or overlooked? It's one of the most popular shoegaze albums out. Cornershop - When I Was Born for the 7th time
A great album, but not obscure. It is Edwyn's most successful solo album by far, and "A Girl Like You" was a hit single on both sides of the Atlantic. As an aside, I've always felt "The Campaign for Real Rock" to be self-conscious anti-tribute to Bowie's "Memory of a Free Festival", right down to the extended coda. Anyone?
Not necessarily a great record, but a solid one that does has it's moments. Unfortunately it suffered from a severely bad case of timing (released in 1991), as had it come out a few years later during the glory days of BritPop it might have faired much better with the record buying public.
Definitely, also "In The Long Still Night". I said it before but if these were Nick Cave albums they would still be excellent. Only more people would know 'em
This release should go down real well with fans of, say... The Velvets, Pavement, Neil Young/ Crazy Horse or Beachwood Sparks. Just a timeless album, and one you can likely find for dirt cheap since I don't think it really ever sold many copies.
I'm not claiming it is the greatest album ever or the most original but for some reason I bought Nothing Sacred by Hog and I've always liked it. Puzzle by the Seedy Arkhestra is an interesting album. Basically a Chris Dowd (formerly of Fishbone) solo album.
That usually makes it expensive in my book. Although it appears US buyers have the advantage over us Brits, with copies going for a penny on Amazon (versus £14 for Amazon UK). Still, I will keep my eye out for it.
As a fan of the NZ underground, there are plenty of obscure albums. But away from that area, I just bought a copy of Supreme Dicks The Emotional Plague.
The Scandinavian band Salt had only one album called "Auscultate" released in '95 that I think is killer. The song "Bluster" got a bit of airplay but it pretty much fell by the wayside. They were a power trio with a female singer/guitarist who played all the guitar parts. Very rocking with contrasting melody and dissonance. A bit like Veruca Salt without the harmonies.
Wendy MaHarry's two solo albums, self-titled from 1990, Fountain of Youth in 1991. They're not world beaters but they're inventive enough pop records, and she has a very appealing voice and is a good songwriter. Also so obscure she doesn't have a Wikipedia entry, her two albums have only 10 and 13 ratings on Rate Your Music respectively, and I've never heard of anyone that's into her.
I never really thought The Original Sins were that obscure back in the 90's. Anyway, I always seemed to be stumbling across their albums and there were a bunch of them. Today, they have exactly one song on Pandora and it's from a Velvet Underground tribute comp. Maybe the most obscure album I have from them is Turn You On, on vinyl from 1993 on Bedlam Records. It's also one of their best.
