NBC Sculpts Conan in Clay for 'Sweeps' Stunt

    Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It may very well be late-night comedian Conan O'Brien's most animated performance.

NBC plans to air an entire installment of its "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" in stop-motion clay animation for next Thursday's broadcast of the show, the network said on Friday.

The May "sweeps" stunt, which has been in production for months, is a complete clay-animated re-creation of an episode of "Late Night" from last October, including the show's opening monologue, guest appearances, and even the "bumpers" that lead in and out of commercials.

The animation is not nearly as life-like as the popular "Celebrity Death Match" caricatures on MTV, hewing closer to the more crudely rendered "Mr. Bill" segments of "Saturday Night Live" fame.

Guests for the special Conan episode, produced in-house by NBC's scenic department, are "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville, comedian Richard Lewis and rocker David Bowie. In addition, the show features O'Brien's recurring look into the future in one of his signature sketches, "In the Year 2000," with surprise guest Mr. T.

Said O'Brien of the upcoming presentation, "This may be the best show we've ever done ... in clay."

In another late-night programming gimmick coinciding with the monthlong "sweeps" ratings survey, "The Tonight Show" host Jay Leno will swap jobs for a day with "Today" show host Katie Couric next Monday.

I think Katie will do better than Jay(the first guest host Leno has ever allowed, BTW)......

That Conan show looks like a taper for sure. Conan is underrated in my book, a very funny show.

    Nice idea...

One of my favorite shows of this type was the "Late Night with David Letterman" ep that David had transcribed and re-dubbed with different voices when it was re-run... which was the night that one of their infrequent live prime-time specials aired on NBC.

He put in a specific request for the person to re-dub his voice-- it was the gentleman who was the voice of "Speed Racer" in the US version of the popular Japanese cartoon series!! :D

For those of you who need to track it down, I believe Raquel Welch was a guest that night.

And in case anyone's interested, the network Trio (available mainly on Digital Cable and Satellite) is rerunning "Late Night With David Letterman" Monday-Friday at 7 and 10 PM Pacific. So far, they only have rights to air 80 episodes, but hopefully, they'll expand the contract.
