When switching ICs...can I power down the amp and leave the cdp on, or must everything be powered down?

I vote turn it all off. If anything, to protect your speakers!

As long as the amp is turned off, you're ok. :) BTW, the correct order for powering your system on & off should be:

    ON
    1) preamp
    2) amp
    3) Subwoofer (if you have one)

    OFF
    1) Sub
    2) amp
    3) preamp

    Interesting,

I've always thought that the idea was to protect your speakers. As any one of those devices can potentially cause a "thump" I thought that pre-amp woild be last on and first off. That way there would be no way for the amp or sub to connect to the speakers and potentially do harm.

Vinyl, do you know why your order is correct?

(yea, yea - buy new equipment! But I have vintage stuff! I gots to be careful!) :D

I would recommend turning everything off before you switch interconnects.

I haven't thought about the subwoofer before, but V-A is correct. Well, I never turn my preamp off, but I do put it in standby mode.

To listen to music, I bring the preamp out of standby mode (it takes 40 seconds before it's finished the startup sequence). The preamp is on mute. Then I turn on the SETs and wait a couple of minutes for the valves to put their happy face on. Put on a disc, press play, and remove the mute.

When I'm done for the night, I mute the preamp and turn off the SETs. Wait a minute or so, then put the VK50SE into standby mode.

Gary, if you don't have a mute, just set the volume to zero. The BAT remembers it was muted when you bring it out of standby mode, and it just assumes the position. It's a clever thing.

    sasaki,

As far as changing interconnects, if you are changing the i/cs between a CDP and an integrated amp, just turn the amp off. Never power down the CDP - it takes ages before the stupid things sound good again.

If you are changing the i/cs between CDP and preamp, just change the source switch to something else. You can safely change the CDP-pre i/c this way. In fact, if you are doing interconnect comparisons, this is the only way.

If I am changing the interconnects between pre and power, I turn off the amplifiers. No need to turn off the preamp.

SamS, Dave, prix - you're a bunch of nervous nellies. ;)

Edit: sorry, I just realised that my comments may not apply. I use XLR connectors and they don't have the crucial flaw inherent in RCA plugs (which connect the hot pin before the ground/return). So if you are using these plugs you are probably right to turn everything off, pull out the power cords and throw the breakers at the fuse box. ;)

:agree:  I was going to ask you Geoff...ever accidentally touched 2 RCA's together with opposite ends connected? I have, and it wasn't pretty. ;) Just make sure everything is shut off. No need to unplug.
