what's this all about?
All this fuss to announce that he's postponing again?
My brother, who is a Sun Microsystems high muckity-muck is on a conference call all day today. I doubt that he's involved with this, but an email might be worthwhile. I'll see what I get in return.
He's speaking now.

wow, guess thats that then. No cds at all...not sure i'd want a 10 disc blu ray box set from 63-72....wonder the price tag of that...interesting it can be upgraded down the road though..
Yes, I will be buying a BR player now. Just like I bought an SACD when the Stones and Dylan came out
Sweet! He's playing The Sultan!
"This is a CD, we took a DUMP at that point!"
Neil Young 5/6/08
That's really a misguided decision. Blu-ray is nowhere near an established format. What other formats will this be available in?
If this begins the migration of high-res audio to BD then it is an absolutely momentous announcement.....
Very uninspiring presentation. Can anyone say "Java" 20 times a minute and still maintain coherent sentences? Jeez.
This is cool and all, but I have to say that when it comes to music, I still want it on CD, not on any video hybrid disc. I don't want to have to turn on my TV to listen, I want to be able to play it in my car, etc.
I suspect there will be audio only CD distillations of some of the material. And I guess that's fine.
I would also opine that if the legendarily picky Neil has to ultimately sign off on an A/V adventure (rather than just music), this project may get even further delayed.
I wonder if there'll be a bonus disc devoted to Lionel Trains?
Considering how long it's taken Neil to get this out (and it's still not out, of course), does anyone seriously believe he's going to be providing constant internet updates?
So disc 3 is 'Topanga 1968'. I'm guessing that's going to be Buffalo outtakes and solo demos..
Seems like he is releasing his Archive 1 as a 5 volume series of 2 Blueray discs per volume. Wonder if he will release it as normal cd's? However a the conference he doesn't seem to mention it
I'll take unreleased Neil in any format. If this thing was cassette only I'd be excited.
i thought they said 10 discs in this volume?
I like Neil Young's music, I don't love all of it, but hot diggedy dang if this comes out as announced this will definitely push me to buy a Blu-Ray player.
According to the Uncut article they won't be released on CD.
"Young said at the time, at a press conference at Sundance Film Festival: "I know it's in technical production now, but it's only coming out on Blu-ray and DVD. There won't be CDs. Technology has caught up to what the concept was in the first place [and] how we're able to actually present it. But there's no doubt it will come out this year."
I'm not so sure about the video content of these releases.
Do you really want to watch the same slide-show beyond a few times?
I don't know much about Blu-Ray -- can you use the discs in a computer? Could he include audio files that are downloadable to an iPod or burned CDs?
