Maybe I should start another thread for this, but as there seem to be a lot of serious NY acolytes here--would you recommend any post-Sleeps With Angels albums as must-hear (or anything close to that) in anticipation of this new one? I like the guy a lot, but he has too huge a discography for me to wrestle with all of it. I have almost all the 60s and 70s stuff, then some highlights of the 80s and 90s up to Sleeps With Angels. Nothing after that.
My favorite post-Sleeps With Angels albums: 2000- Silver & Gold - Tender, nostalgic acoustic album. Probably my favorite post-Sleeps album? 2006 - Living With War - I think the songs are very strong on this one, if not dated and preachy. I think a lot of people don't like this one but I love it. 2007 - Chrome Dreams II - The most Sleeps With Angels-ey album out there? Ordinary People is the standout track, not unlike Change Your Mind. 2010 - Le Noise - This is a weird one, but not really. Good songs. Interesting production. 2012 - Psychedelic Pill - Okay, this is my favorite Neil album of the 2000s. Psychedelic crazy horse sprawl with some great hooks. 2021 - Barn - Great songs! Feels like a neil album oughtta. That's just my personal opinion. A lotta folks like Broken Arrow. Prairie Wind is pretty good too. You asked for "must-hear", so I'd say Silver & Gold and Psychedelic Pill are the only ones that fit that description.
Must haves for me: Mirror Ball Broken Arrow Silver And Gold Prairie Wind Chrome Dreams II Le Noise Americana Psychedelic Pill Peace Trail The Visitor Colorado Barn The others have good things about them too, IMO.
Top albums for me are: - Broken Arrow (1996) - Silver & Gold (2000) - Prairie Wind (2005) - Chrome Dreams II (2007) - Le Noise (2010) - Psychedelic Pill (2012) - Barn (2021)
My favorite post-Sleeps With Angels albums, in chronological order: -Silver And Gold (2000) -Prairie Wind (2005) -Storytone (2014) -The Visitor (2017) -Barn (2021) But I have to admit I haven't listened to every album yet!
It feels good to be able to preorder new Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen on the same day. Now if only Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series 17 would get announced.
Broken Arrow, Le Noise, and Psychedelic Pill are the 3 standouts for me post-Sleeps With Angels. However, there are two archival releases I'd recommend, too: Massey Hall and Hitchhiker, recorded in the 70s but not released until after SWA.
I'd be most interested for you to bypass all the other records and go straight into Barn and give us your thoughts.
If you go for Silver and Gold, you should also go for Toast, which is from 2000/1 but just released this summer Its really great.
Wow. That is really bad. Sounds like a 10 year old wrote it. Or maybe this is an album of children’s songs?
Truly a shocker on repeated listens. Not sure what I was expecting but this track bums me out. Lucky there are so many good listens out today.
i love 'ol shakey, but at this point i really don't need to hear him sing about the earth or nature anymore. he's already said what he wanted to say, and now he's just recycling with pretty half baked lyrical ideas.
Just listened to the “Love Earth” sample. Sounds like Neil is really entering some unmined lyrical territory! But hey, that slide sounds great!
I like that it has a quirky standout sound, not like "generic low powered CH track no. 38" or anything. A cute little middle of side 2 thing. Strange foot forward as single for a new LP tho.
