I sing it in my car on a regular basis. You don't want to hear that version, but it is my favorite, except for all the others.

    It's Dume alone that counts.

Similar, but I much prefer the guitar solos on Live Rust. It's the version I've known for 40 years and anything else sounds wrong to me. But I think it's better anyway.

    I LOVE the Hitchhiker version.

But nothing, nothing, will ever touch the Rust original.

I love the guitar line after he sings “Shelter me from the powder and the finger” on that version. For some reason that’s what does it for me.

The Live Rust version is one of the greatest slabs of guitar rock ever laid down. It would be on my mythical desert island top ten.

Huge Neil fan. Never heard the Cowboy Junkies verson.

Just listened to it for the first time on account of your recommendations. Y'all are nuts. Cowboy Junkies version is one of those typical, "let slow down the song and have the singer try to sound creepy" versions. Snoozeville. There's no power or majesty.

Haven't you also known the Rust Never Sleeps version for 40 years? Agree the others beyond the original two sound "wrong" but I've always preferred the original and thought the LR version pretty much duplicated the first, which was also recorded live IIRC. I'll listen closely to the solos on Live Rust again :righton:
