We watched this film the other night in two parts. We liked it. I thought it was rather epic in scale. The slowness of it reminded me of 2001-Space Odyssey. Maybe if all you’re used to are 30 minute Mandalorian episodes the Irishman would seem very slow. But I grew up in the 60s and 70s when films could be slower and tell a tale. The de-aging didn’t bother me a bit.

One odd note was Anna Paquin’s role, she didn’t say one word in the film. I assume that was intentional to convey her estrangement.

    Earliest date for physical media.

The only show on Netflix that I’m aware of that got a physical releases was The Crown. Did Roma? So we’ll see about the Irishman.

Edit- Roma was released on Blu-ray by Criterion.

    Say whaaaaaat?

  8. I've heard from three our four people that Parasite is their very favorite film of the year. It is on my short list and it's probably not what you think.

Ha, I didn't care for Parasite much either. I liked the first half but it got a little too cartoonish for me. And the "class disparity" message wasn't especially insightful or handled very interestingly.

It’s in my top 10 of the year. But then I’ve seen only 11 movies.

The Irishman is better than Parasite.
The Irishman is a horrible movie.
    Do the math.

  13. Pesci got a golden globe supporting actor nom. DeNiro and Pacino nothing. Best film drama and Scorsese director also got noms

Actually, both Pesci and Pacino are up for best supporting actor.

  16. Thanks for the correction. I missed that. I think Pesci deserves it more..

Didn't she ask her dad why he hadn't called Hoffa's widow?
I get what you're saying though. Her overall silence was meant to convey something.

She was her Dads daughter - stoic like him. But she had her eyes open all of her life - watching and understanding what was going on. Her silence was used in the films favor - when she finally did speak it was to confront her father and it was powerful. She was authoritative and accusational and her Dad folded under her gaze. Strong stuff.

it makes no sense whatsoever that deniro got snubbed by the golden globes, it was his movie, he was in almost every scene.

i don't think the oscars will make the same mistake.

The 70% mark is just about exactly the point in the movie when Pesci is making the salad and tells DeNiro Hoffa is going to be killed..
I used my advanced mathematical skills to figure this out.

Everyone watching it knows Hoffa is going to be killed. Watching it dawn so slowly on DeNiro over multiple drawn-out scenes is definitely slow going.
