Wondering whether there might be a 1964: New Directions set in the future...

Listening to the one track released on Spotify now and it reminds me a lot of the vibe on Both Directions At Once.

Agreed, hoping for better, all analog.
There is also a blue vinyl version from VMP, which says Quality Records is pressing it, so i had my hopes up,
    only to be pessimistic again.

Thought some of us jazz fans would be interested in this one.

A Lost Album From John Coltrane, With Thanks To A French-Canadian Director

Couldnt find much info on mastering or anything like that. Hopefully more info becomes available. I feel like Both Directions sounded ok, but could have been done better. Maybe they'll put a little more attention to the vinyl SQ this time around.

There is another thread about this.
But we don't have enough Coltrane threads on this forum so it's ok.

By the way I can't wait for this. And I don't even care if I've already listened to other 4863622 versions of "Naima".

Is this actually a lost album this time, or just another rehearsal session that wasn't considered good enough back in the day? Not that I wouldn't buy it anyway - lord knows I have enough Sun Ra albums that are just taped rehearsal sessions - but it would be nice if they didn't resort to exaggerated publicity hype-speak every time.

Kind of a stretch to call this a lost album, but I can't say I am not interested in hearing this session.

    04. Village Blues (Take 1)

    06. Like Sonny
    07. Traneing In
    08. Naima (Take 2)

The John Coltrane Reference - Updates - 1964

It seems discographers have known about this possibility for ten years

The Discography (p. 706) is revised as follows:

Add the following NEW SESSION following session 64-0601:

    64-0624
Wednesday, June 24, 1964. Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ.
JOHN COLTRANE QUARTET: John Coltrane (ts); McCoy Tyner (p); Jimmy Garrison (b); Elvin
    Jones (dr)

    a-1. Village Blues ( : )
    a-2. Village Blues ( : )
    b-1. Naima ( : )
    b-2. Naima ( : )
    c. Out of This World ( : )

    Note:
Soundtrack for the French-Canadian film Le Chat Dans le Sac (The Cat in the Sack), a film by Gilles Groulx. Originally it was thought that the Coltrane recordings used in this film were excerpts from the standard, commercially available recordings. However, when the film was put online by the National Film Board of Canada, Chris DeVito determined that the soundtrack versions were new. Further research by Lewis Porter unearthed the information above, and his analysis of the fragmentary music in the film indicates that there are multiple takes of at least two of the titles. Whether the original, unedited versions of these recordings still exist is unknown. The film can be viewed at

Merged two threads on this subject and tweaked the subject line to include the album title. Carry on...

It's not really either a lost album or a taped rehearsal session. It was a recording session specifically designed to provide material for the sound track of a film (which included other music as well). It was not originally an Impulse! project nor intended to be a standalone album. It's not been volunteered where the original tapes may have ended up, and what we will have is a transfer of a mono 7.5 ips reel give to Coltrane to take home from the session.

Yes. It also appears the director wanted some of his Trane favorites on the soundtrack rather than new compositions. Will be interesting to hear some of those 1959-60 compositions played by 1964 Trane.

Or the "big jacket" is possibly a poster. CDJapan shows only one item, SHM-CD for 2400 yen (outside of Japan).
