I found this song today, which was released last Friday:

It's Martin Garrix with Bono and Edge doing a song for the UEFA EURO2020 football tournament.

It sounds a lot like '80s U2. (I'm not saying it's as good as their best '80s stuff. Just that it has that sound, especially Edge's guitar at the beginning).

    What do you think?

Agreed on the guitar parts -- and perhaps a good way to re-introduce (parts of) U2 to a newer generation -- but I wouldn't mind hearing some remixes to help it level up a bit.

    Didn't have that auto-tune in the 80s

Which '80s U2, specifically? I grew up with them in that decade, and don't hear anything in this song that is a throwback to that era. If anything, it is just more of that vanilla modern pop-rock sound that Bono and Co. has been embracing over the past 10-15 years.

Sounds like U2 trying to sound like Coldplay trying to sound like U2. Only acceptable if it means Ireland qualify after all.

    Vocals on autotune...
    Songwriting on autowrite...
Production directly from the conveyor belt... Wait, didn't Coldplay just release a song that sounded exactly like this? Must be a glitch in the matrix :waiting:

Not such a bad tune, but anything with auto-tune on it is a piece of crap.

Well, I really liked it. And I didn’t perceive any autotune.

I think it is a terrible, generic song.

    1/5.

The U2 haters are an interesting bunch. They’ll tell you U2 is washed up and hasn’t been relevant in decades, and yet they are still spending time writing their little hate posts in threads like this.

Soooooo...............they skipped the U2 version and went straight to the DJ/Club version, hmm. Not sure how many times I'm gonna wanna hear this one. Not trying to be a hater.

No. The DJ went straight for Bono and The Edge and skipped an all-club version. It is a Martin Garrix song (featuring Bono and The Edge) as he was asked by the UEFA to provide the theme song for the European Championship tournament. UEFA didn't approach Bono or The Edge, they approached Martin Garrix.

The track has potential but sounds incomplete without Adam Clayton & Larry Mullin Jr. playing on it. If they did it would be an improvement to anything they did on Songs of Experience.

I like it. Does it have that kind of pat feeling that started creeping into their work with (the nonetheless amazing) ATYCLB and the following album's "freedom has a scent like the top of a newborn baby's head" lyrics? Yes. Is that a deal-breaker for me? Not when the song is as good and the performance(s) as committed as this one. Much better than anything from that last album, IMHO.

‘Dad rock’, another absolutely meaningless expression.

Also, is it just me, or does it seem like most white alternative and rock acts can't seem to feature non-white people in their videos without making it into a statement, writ large and flashing neon?

This, BTW, does not seem to be the case in most pop music videos, where inclusion seems more normal and less forced.

In this video, you can tell they mean well, but I think if I were non-white myself, I might find this video - and many others like it - more than a bit patronizing, maybe even a bit insulting. Am I wrong here?

Not really. It means "music that has lost its finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist and has settled into comfortable complacency." And it applies appropriately to much of what gets the label these days.

But here's the thing: In another 15 years, Tame Impala will likely be Dad rock, and Phoebe Bridgers may well be "Mom rock." It just tends to happen to most groups eventually. YMMV.
