I thought this was gonna be about a radio station that played Barry Manilow's "Weekend In New England" on a continuous loop!

My go-to college radio station during my high school/college years was WUNH in Durham, NH. Greg Kretschmar (of the WHEB Morning Buzz) and Lori D (another WHEB veteran, now at another station in town) are WUNH alums. Gary Sredzienski has hosted a Saturday morning polka show there for more than 30 years, and Larry Etscovitz has hosted "Classical Connections" there since 1982!
Polka Party | WUNH 91.3 fm
Classical Connections | WUNH 91.3 fm

I have been listening to radio in Boston since 1967. Ask me anything.

WMEX was the cooler station. RKO was the juggernaut. Then we all went to FM. WBCN, CAS, WBZ-FM, WVBF, then COZ. It was AOR, then new wave, then kick ass then petty then grunge.

But most important I think that college radio is one the the great beacons of culture in the world. And it's great in Boston. (As it is in NY/NJ)

WTBS became WMBR aat MIT and it's one of the best stations anywhere still. BC, BU, Emerson, Harvard, all contribute. Real radio will be missed.

I always imagined "New England Radio" playing a bunch of Bruce Hornsby, Manhattan Transfer, and Carly Simon.

    This.

I grew up listening to WBCN, every morning before school.

@marmil can probably contribute a lot to this thread.

I love ZLX, it's the only station I listen to if I end up listening to the radio at all. They're great to listen to late at night because they always play deep album cuts and sometimes even uncensored versions of songs (I once heard them play the 40th anniversary remix of The End by The Doors at like 3 am and didn't realize it was the remix until I could clearly hear Jim repeatedly dropping the F bomb, much to my delight). However I do miss FNX and BCN :(

Very cool bumper sticker. I worked at BCN from 1978-1984 so if there's anything you wanna know, just ask.

Nah - that was long gone by the time I got there. There was also an acetate of Tommy that Townshend brought to the station. I know who has that one and I've been bugging him for it for almost 40 years.

marmil It's such a long story...

I was the producer of The Big Mattress from 1979-81 and along with that came doing the Duane Glasscock* show on Saturday from 10 am - 2 pm. I hated doing that show. I didn't think it was funny and after working all week from 5:45 am - 5 pm (I was also Asst. Music Director) I really didn't want to go to the station on Saturday mornings. Plus the fact that Saturday night I was either on the air from midnight - 6 am or DJ'ing at Spit. Now the rule was - for both Charles & Duane - if you got there later than 15 minutes before the show started, you were fired. So one Saturday I'd decided that I'd had enough and, gambling on the fact that Charles really believed that he & Duane were separate people, I showed up at 10:30 and was immediately fired by Duane. When I came in Monday morning, it was as if nothing had happened. Charles never said a word. But I was still fired from Duane's show. Mission accomplished!

*For those of you who don't know, Duane was Charles' alter-ego, an 18 year-old clone from Butte, Montana.
