WRKO Boston was a monster Top 40 station around '71. Three Dog Night, Rod Stewart, Doors etc.. They planted Olivia's "If Not For You" on heavy rotation, unlike rest of country.

I thought that I would give this thread a bump because of some recent findings.

WBZ Boston also used to be a Top 40 station around the '70s as well.

    WBZ-FM was briefly a full-fledged freeform station circa 1968!

So I messaged Magic 106.7 on Facebook Messenger asking them if they knew anything about the Janine Turner commercial, and the radio DJ who is currently on the air right now actually knew about it believe it or not!

Surprisingly, I thought that he would’ve forgotten about it.

They were automated except for the afternoon and evenings. Ken Shelton did a top 40 by listener vote from 3 to 7 or so, (Way better tahn Casey Kasem, and including a bummer record of the week) and then did what would be a very early classic rock concept, called "the supergroups" with Elton, Paul, DeepPurple+Grand Funk, etc. for two hours. Clark Schmidt was on after that with the Music Show at night, with FM sounds OK for drifting off to sleep to, It was a great station. Clark left to start WCOZ and Ken followed within a year.

I agree. Living in Worcester during the 80s WBRU was my go to station as WBCN and WAAF faded into mainstream obscurity. Somewhere I know I have this bumpersticker.

Living in central Massachusetts we were blessed by geography if nothing else that allowed us to listen to so many stations. While geographically not too far apart each station had a somewhat local flair that informed what was played. In other words what was being played in Hartford was somewhat different than Boston. Stations that would make it to the Alpine stereo in my 81 Toyota Corolla was amazing

    WAAF
    WBCN
    WCCC
    WHCN
    WAQY
    WHJY
    WBRU
    WCOZ
    WXNF
    WGIR
    WMDK
    WCUW
    WICN
    WCHC
    WBOS

Even with that list I am sure I missed a few.

Some years ago I kept doing searches and did find one of the more regular WBRU staff, and we communicated together for a while. He was also a member of of rock band from Brown U who opened for Neil young and Crazy Horse who played The Warehouse in Providence. BRU was a great collegiate radio station!
