Here it is. The new SME built Garrard 301. Cream with oil bearing. £12,500 with plinth and SME M2-12R tonearm. Photo Herb Reichert.

SME purchased the rights to the Garrard last year. It was bound to happen at the point!

I was excited for this to happen as I figure the value of my 1954 301 just tripled. SME already raised the price of the M2-12r by >$1000 since I bought one.

Interesting. I wonder what the cost is for just the motor unit. Also, I wonder what the plinth type is, hollow, CLD, etc.?

Looks sort of forlorn, sitting there. Don't know why I think that.

It isn't on SME's website. Nor on a google search either.

Where did the image come from?

That plinth looks like the kind you see as a package deal when shopping for a 301 on ebay that you plan on throwing away if you win the auction.

    agreed.

the plinth designs from Woodsong, etc. are a massive step up ... at least from that pic. maybe it's just the photo? at that price they are competing with AF and they make stunning tables.

Yeah, we've both got fully restored authentic Garrard made 1954 301s with M2-12Rs and probably superior plinths so what are our decks now valued at?

I really want to see if it's a copy of the original or they've made improvements under the chassis.

What's interesting is as part of buying Garrard they bought Loricraft, which makes suspended plinths, but that doesn't look like a Loricraft. I imagine it's hollow though.

It's also interesting they went with the strobe platter vs. the solid black platter. Unless they put an integrated strobe light, I'd much rather have the solid platter.

Is the 12a a turntable or tonearm?

So, what's the actual out of pocket for a vintage one today that has been properly gone over, not modified as some, but in a high quality plinth (my friend Albert does these Panzerholz plinths for the SP10 that are supposed to be great, but quite costly even for materials). Assuming you are DIY capable, that brings down the cost, but if one were to get the turntable done by a good restorer, add high quality plinth, what are you into, price wise, in today's market?
