From what I see it’s not the person Elba that some grey folk do not want, it’s the other thing they don’t like. When more than half of the box office is earned in countries that would like a Bond like Elba, these grey folk that are having a hard time with these discussions, it’s gonna be hard times for them.

I dunno, I think the villain plan from Goldeneye still holds up fairly well:

A satellite in space poised to release an EMP that will cripple the computer systems of an entire country and disrupt banking, etc.

    Could happen. Would be bad.

Grey folk? what are grey folk?

Ian Fleming was a white Englishman who wrote about
a white spy in a white culture with a white skin and a
white identity. Bond is white. It is not insulting to say
so. There is no confusion about this. End of debate.

    Hoo, boy.

I’ve never read any of the novels, so I’m curious. Did Fleming ever, one time, in any of his books, describe Bond as being white?

Ian Fleming approved the casting of Sean Connery and even introduced his Scottish heritage as part of the Bond character in the "You only live twice" novel.

Nothing against people with non-pale skin, but..those thinking there would be non-white Scottish MI6 agents in the 50s, when the Bond character was created, are simply wrong.

Furthermore, in the Casino Royale novel, Vesper says that Bond looked like Hoagy Carmichael. Another character in Moonraker (the novel) says that Bonds looked a bit like Hoagy Carmichael.

For the curious ones, that's the answer. :)

I’m personally pretty ambivalent about this topic, but if that’s all there is to go by, it seems like a fairly weak justification for those claiming that a non-white Bond would be unacceptable or in contrast to the character. Especially considering that fifty years later we’ve had a blond Bond and a dead Bond, among other variations. And a female M, etc. (while I’m not an expert, I’d imagine those thinking there would be a non-male head of the MI6 in the ‘50s are simply wrong).

  8. Well they killed off Craig’s Bond. Batman also retired and went to France (or maybe he died-it is a Nolan film). Characters are never really dead.

You asked if Fleming described in his book Bond as white. You got evidence. That's what's in the books Fleming wrote.

If that's not enough: in Live and Let die, the novel, while Bond and Leiter are in Harlem, the book says exactly "two white men" describing them. Not only Bond, but Leiter too.

As for the blonde Bond, the "From russia with love" novel states "black short hair".

Whatever Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson did later, it sure doesn't always represents the characters Fleming created.

And by the way, this is a draw Fleming did to portray Bond. What more evidence is needed to describe what Fleming created?

This is a list of the Directors of MI5

Director General of MI5 - Wikipedia

Judi Dench's M was based on the first female director of MI5, holding the position for four years starting from 1992.

So, no female heads of the British Security Agency in the 50s...and in the 60s...and in the 70s...and in the 80s...

In 113 years, non-male heads of MI5 were two. And for 9 years combined.

Judith Dench's M was a specific resposne to Stella Rimington's leadership of MI6. The movies have to reflect how the service exists in the present day, and the services now explicitly recruit for ethnic diversity.

I consider myself “old” (maybe that’s part of the definition?) but I don’t want Bond to change or evolve - I think that’s far different from not wanting the world to change because Bond is a fictional character in wild situations.

I have one or two favorite meals, if the person that makes them for more suddenly changed the recipes because they “evolved” as a cook, I probably wouldn’t care to eat those dishes anymore.

Blues, soul and hip hop music are extensions of black culture. Will white guys and girls stop making it? Give it a spin from their own culture and backround. Making something for all to enjoy? Blues musicians should only be black and come from the Delta or Chicago right? Seems fair in your comparison?

There is no analogy between Bond and blues / hip-hop.

This is a ridiculous analogy. You're comparing a specific property and character with an entire genre and movement.

Maybe this is why James Corden is clearing his schedule next year? "Bond: The Musical" <tagline: It's Much Better than 'Cats'>

Much easier to cast an actor who already has the same first name as the character.

Corden would certainly be an eggs-citing addition to the franchise.

If they’re going to go the late night talk show host route, hopefully they’ll pick Craig Ferguson instead. He has the Scottish heritage, and has already demonstrated that he’s about 1,000 times more talented than Corden.
