My point is, sometimes people like things they way they are. It doesn’t make them bad people, it also doesn’t mean they don’t want other things to change either. I’m not a keyboard warrior. Just not my style.
How loud were you shouting in your head as you bashed that one out on your keyboard? How red was your face while you did it? Go on... tell us The only thing you might've left out just after "There is no confusion about this" is... and no change is allowed... EVER. End of debate.
I type relaxed, confident and slightly bemused. The anger is in your head, not mine. The facts are what they are. James Bond is white by definition. How you feel about the facts doesn't change them.
You read anger in a message with laughing emoji's and an obviously humorous tone? Well, colour me bemused. Or are you suggesting I've misunderstood the tone of your "white" rant? I would've thought the tone of that little diatribe was pretty unambiguous? And now you know what's in my head too? Clearly you do... otherwise you wouldn't be getting this defensive right off the bat would you? We used to cling to all sorts of things that are vile and egregious - I grew up (a person of colour) in Apartheid, South Africa so I have some first hand experience with "relaxed, confident" people staking red-faced claims about definitions of whiteness. And how you feel about those particular facts doesn't change them either. Change is OK mate... it can be good. Breathe deep and have another think about it m'kay?
Are you just acting a bit thick or intentionally obfuscating? In a nutshell the question being posed is - Would you cry "reverse racism" if someone asserted that white people should be excluded from making blues or hip-hop because it was black music? Did you notice their location which might mean English isn't a first language? It beggars belief that it's OK for us - in 2022 no less - to be openly yelling about how a fictional character, that has already been re-adapted and modernised in several of the most recent films in the franchise must be played by a white actor? Why stop there? Why not go full reactionary and insist they pretend it's the 1950's, dress up in 50's clothes, drive old cars and speak all old-timey too? And the people of colour can just play silent roles... like bringing in the tea? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised... in these days of white nationalist tropes becoming increasingly infused into the mainstream discourse (resulting in some imaginary threat to "whiteness"?) this kind of garbage is already shockingly widespread. We're going backward here for Pete's sake.
LOL. Triggered. That's the only answer you deserve for such a divisive, intellectually disingenuous, thoroughly repugnant reply.
You know, if people just said this there would be no problem. But some of the crap people make up is just a red cloth for me.
I hear you! The internet is a good place to make overwrought statements. I wish I could say I wasn’t guilty of this, despite my best efforts.
Oh dear. All that fire and fury upthread and this clownish buffoonery is the best you two can muster? How unimpressive. So you realised there's no substantive argument you can make to justify the rubbish you spouted upthread? Hence this cowardly attempt at bluffing your way out of this. Anyway... back in the clown car you two...
One has to wonder why try to alter an established character instead of creating new ones that satisfy the current trends, and with original names. You want a non white secret agent? Create a new franchise, give the character an original story. Everytime one of these EON films starts, I clearly see "Ian Fleming's James Bond 007". Ian Fleming, for heaven's sake. Not some revisionist losers that think they know better. It would be a disaster if Toby Jones was cast as Shaft. Or Frances Mc Dormand as Wonder Woman.
You have no idea of my position on the subject as I haven't stated it, but - once more - you waded in with insults from the get-go (as you do on most threads when you discover - to your obvious distress - that people don't always agree with your opinion). There is no real discussion because you're clearly incapable of holding any kind of genuine conversation - other than your already over-the-top virtue signalling. I'm not here to indulge you, Toneh. And I don't owe you an education.
Revisionist? You know we're discussing a fictional character right? And the hypothetical possibility that a studio might cast a Black man in the role. No-one's suggesting we cast Morgan Freeman as Winston Churchill. But if you have such strong anti-revisionist feelings you'd want to boycott the whole franchise then - or are you also advocating we go back to female leads with names like P*ssy Galore, Honey Ryder or Plenty 'O Toole? You know... like back in the good ole' days when everyone knew their place?
A common argument, and a not-undesirable outcome. And yet, if such original projects flop, the same crowd that would cry foul over a black Bond or a female Indy have their arguments all prepared: "knock-off", "better when this was [insert character here]", "woke", "a [insert marginalized group here] could never do that in real life", any other excuse to say "see? the version with the white guy was just better".
You mean like the numbskulls who got all bent out of shape about Black Panther? One of my favourite comments I read somewhere read something like “You know Wankanda isn’t real right?!!”
If a movie flops at the B.O is because it's bad or the people don't want to pay to watch it. "Black Panther" made $1.3B , more than any 007 film. There's not somebody called James Bond, so the name was not needed. The Mission : Impossible films are successful and there's not a James Bond. The Fast and Furious films are successful, have a multi ethnic cast, there's not somebody called James Bond. Does the world want a non white British secret agent saving the world? Just go ahead and create an exciting new character, new exciting adventures, new exciting score. All original. If the film's good, and the team is talented enough, the film will be a hit. If the team is untalented and has to rely on an established legendary name, they only have themselves to blame.
Back to speculation on who’s going to be the next James Bond. Guess a few years rather than imminently regards to an announcement. That makes the actor being in his early 30’s to carry the role for a few films. My moneys on a British actor. Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales… England.
I’m with Jimmy on this. Casting him makes sense on so many levels. He can either be the character of James, but the producers could go the successor route, with him carrying the famous 3-digits.
Knowing the ingrained bigotry of Britain (and elsewhere) at the time (and later), not to mention the level of society that Bond moved in or, indeed, the kind of villainy that he dealt with, it's pretty safe to say that Bond would have been white. The notion that a black Bond, who everyone would know about, could turn up to a casino full of rich white Brits, Americans, French people, Germans and Russians and still not be recognised would be pushing it. Now, less so - except maybe for....
