"ArchAndroid" gotta be one of the 10 best albums of the 21st century! Agree "Lady" wasn't nearly as good. I've still never played the debut EP!
The Guardian has a good interview today with her: 'You don't own or control me': Janelle Monáe on her music, politics and undefinable sexuality
Do you mean that you have never heard "Metropolis"? It's absolutely on the same level as "Archandroid", only shorter. I almost never listen to the latter without listening to the former first (though I usually skip the Bonus Tracks).
So we've had ArchAndroid and now Dirty Computer... what's next, Kid C?.... Seriously though, must check out the new one!
Good God, it sounds as if she put all the explicit content she didn't have on her previous albums into the new one. Dirty Computer indeed. "Make Me Feel" sounds great, channelling her inner Prince once more. "Django Jane" sounds like a standard Hip-Hop track, not really something I need Janelle Monáe for.
Agreed - even though ‘Make Me Feel’ sounds like pure pastiche, it is really enjoyable - ‘Django Jane’ sounds so tired.
Haven't had a chance to hear these new songs yet, but I'm super excited. I've been a fan since the first EP, cemented when I saw her open for Erykah Badu several years ago. She's fantastic.
Make Me Feel is terrific. I like some of the lines and themes of Django Jane, just not sure about Janelle rapping.
I dig the new tracks! It's unclear whether this will be a true concept album continuing the Metropolis story or not, but these tracks point towards not. Either way we still have the ArchAndroid at the end of the day, and as long as the new songs are good I won't see too much to complain about.
This album is going to be a PROBLEM. Janelle is venturing out and the music is very unapologetic. I love it and I’m so happy for her. “D’Jango Jane” is dope and “Make You Feel” is funky as well. I will buy this album on iTunes, on CD, and on vinyl. She has all of my support
I like her and am a fan...but I never have seen where she is venturing out. Make Me Feel is total hook in the Prince vein of Kiss. Which is fine. The other song Ill pass commenting on because Im not a fan of that type rap/hip hop. Id rather her went more electronica funk. Which I guess some would say "Well she has already done that" Well, Prince already did Make Me Feel. Still, I like her and I like Make Me Feel. But it aint venturing out..
I do think she's bringing something new to the table with the odd twist and her personality. Sci-Fi elements being one example. She has shared the stage/collaborated with Prince/Stevie Wonder/Grace Jones. I do like the face chains Prince reference.
The B&W vinyl for Electric Lady is one of the extreme few coloured vinyl that got me excited. Only a minor sonic upgrade over the CD.
I will order it the second it becomes available. My wife and I saw her in Atlanta on The Electric Lady tour and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, including the 2 opening acts and the PA music between acts! When they blasted "Bombs Over Baghdad," I felt like I was in a big musical dance number with the entire audience. Heck, we even had a special appearance by Big Boi!
First introduction was at Glastonbury 2011. There was quite a buzz about her though I'd never heard of her. I popped along to have a look and couldn't believe what I was seeing! Well, this.....
