Recent-ish favorites: Grouper, Sunflower Bean, Julianna Barwick, the Black Ryder, Brightblack Morning Light. I also enjoy Jim Jarmusch's band SQURL's soundtrack work for his films, and the soundtracks to "Only Lovers Left Alive" and "Paterson" are excellent.

2001 seems like a lifetime ago. I was very into the first Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album and Doves (who may have come out at the tail end of the '90's but I first saw them in early 2001 with unsigned New York dudes The Strokes opening) but I don't spin them much lately.

I do indeed! In fact, it's thanks to Sparks that I even know about Mini Mansions. Mini Mansions have been serving as Sparks' backing band on the recent Hippopotamus tour.

“New” bands from potentially 18 years ago??? That’s like calling Abby Road and Appetite for Destruction Lps from the same era? The Mars Volta have released their debut, 6 other Lps, split and all transitioned from their 20’s to their 40’s in this time! That’s a heck of a long time in the music business. If modern day teenagers weren’t even born when something was released it’s not new music, it’s an oldie!

I'm old school...apparently, very old school. Only three artists in my collection who made a name for themselves in this millennium. Norah Jones (2002), Vintage Trouble (2011), and now one of my favorites- Robert Randolph and the Family Band (2002).

This is true. If a band's debut album came out before 2014 I'd have a hard time calling them "new" anymore. I'd actually say new probably means 2016 and beyond.

Arcade Fire, Halestorm, The National and Beach House aren't new artists. They're virtually old artists at this point, having probably now released their most popular material. It's nearly the 2020s.

Or, put it this way: Arcade Fire's Funeral was released in 2004. That's 14 years ago. That's like calling M.C. Hammer a new artist in 2004, or Queen a new artist in 1990, or The Beatles a new artist in 1976. 14 years is a long time.

This thread would have probably been better served saying "bands that started after 2010".

I guess there's also a point, though, that new music can take a while to filter through to people that aren't on the pulse of new music? Someone like CHVRCHES or Dilly Dally or Soccer Mommy could seem new and exciting today to somebody that isn't really listening to lots of new stuff, they might stumble across it by chance or get a recommendation or listen to their Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. Whereas for those of us that are highly invested in new music, they're bands we've known about for a while.

Yes, but there are literally people on this forum who mean Nirvana and Guns n Roses when they're talking about "new music." There is a sizeable contingent on this forum who genuinely don't listen to anything release after they graduated from high school, and at least one who claimed with complete seriousness that rock music ended around 1979.
