Care to elaborate a bit on that for someone new to attempting to better understand the mastering/remastering process as a whole?
No quiet/loud dynamics whatsoever. Levels slammed all the way through. Heavily compressed and limited. Causes listening fatigue almost instantly in older folks. Vinyl is cut from the same brickwalled master as the CD.
Gotcha... so another way of say that in layman's terms is that the record is loud all the way through (obviously excluding intros/outros), instead of having some soft parts in songs, and some loud parts of songs? I'll take a spin tomorrow and listen for that.
It's interesting to me (but probably nobody else) that these Pearl Jam re-issue threads all turn into the same thing -ie- their music should sound better, but it doesn't. And why, you may ask? The usual suspects all claim the usual suspects: because it's 'brickwalled', mastered poorly, mixed poorly, digitally sourced, etc. Those of us that DO enjoy the re-issues are usually dismissed as having one of the following: poor judgement, poor equipment, poor hearing, yadda yadda yadda. This is about the 649th time this kind of nonsense comes from some thread-crapper who hasn't either the time, sense, or class to adhere to one of the basic tenets of this forum: fill out your profile page. Now I'm gonna give 'Ten Redux' a spin on the ol' turntable...
Not to derail the thread, but what's the story on this? (I always liked Abbruzzese's drumming the best for PJ).
With these reissues of R/A, Binaural and Avocado coming out as double LP's, would that not offer a little hope of them being decent, sound wise?
Exactly, the drummer on TEN was ok, Abbruzzese brought an incredible groove into PJ on VS. IMO Jack Irons was not that good of a replacement choice in drumming style in the first place. Sounded very forced and struggling to keep up at all, he was not on par technically with Dave. Matt has proven a long-lasting working career as a solid drummer in PJ (read: day job), but still sound too Soundgarden-ish. No other PJ album has the excellent groove combination of bass/drums as VS.
I'm really excited for this. I've been lucky enough to own an original pressing of Yield, but nearly everything else has been hard to come by. Glad to finally get my hands on Riot Act, and the first legitimate release of the Save You single on vinyl.
I emailed SoundStage Direct about it and as of Monday they hadn't received shipping info from the manufacturer. I saw somewhere that someone got an updated shipment date of 11/15. On the other hand, there are some reports of people already getting the 7" singles they ordered. So just like most other Pearl Jam releases, its a mess.
That’s annoying if it’s true. Been looking forward to these coming at the weekend! The singles I’m not bothered about, I’ve ordered both Riot Act and Binaural to see how they sound. Will order Pearl Jam S/T if reports of the remix are positive. I wonder if Binaural will be the best sounding of the reissues so far. I believe it was recorded quite well... One gripe...why arent these PJ reissues ever cut by a top mastering studio like Acoustech or Bernie Grundman mastering? Pearl Jam are a pretty big rock band so it seems strange. I’m not being critical of SST necessarily, who cut the last batch, but I’m sure more could be put into it given the scale of demand? EDIT: just checked Amazon and it still shows 10/11/17 as release date but shows the cd reissues as 15/12/17. I hope they don’t all get pushed to the cd release date
Oh no, I really hope it doesn't get pushed further. I got Binaural, Riot Act, and Avocado. The only single I got was "Save You" because it hasn't ever been released on vinyl before, I love that song, and I have originals of the others
And in addition to all of that, you can actually hear the compressor kick in! Like, at some points when the drums kick in you can hear things get quieter and buried in the mix
I have the ultra super deluxe vinyl box, and of all the stuff in it, the only thing I really listen to anymore is the Drop in the Park show. The notebook full of pictures and notes is cool, but the rest I could do without. Hard to sell it without the one thing I want to keep, though.
I have been checking my email over and over waiting to get the email that says they have been shipped. Saw on Pearl Jam.com that the people who bought the box set have had the actual box delivered but none of the records! I bought these from pearl Jam.com and I wish I just bought them from amazon, they were cheaper plus no shipping. Not sure what I was thinking. I ordered angel olsen’s B-sided album Phases which is to be released on the 10th also and it came yesterday.
His drumming annoys me to no end. Can the guy go more than two beats without hitting a crash cymbal? Jack Irons was the best drummer they ever had. It's really a bummer he left, and that there's so little official live material with him.
I get email updates from elusive disc for new releases and just went on their site and it still says November 10th.....fingers crossed it looks like they should be out then!
I got the email notification that Amazon shipped the Avocado vinyl, but no word yet on Binaural or Riot Act.
